Patient SEATTLE -XfV- One-hundred pound nurses who have had to move 250-pound patients in full icasts are giving an extra glance to a simple-looking gadget being displayed t the western Associa tion of Hospitals convention. It's a device, trade-named "In valid." it will handle, transport, weigh or move in any desired msnner helpless persons, regsrd less of their weight or size. It has been considerably refined Mow., May 1, 1950 Tha Newt-Review, Roseburf. Or. 13 since It was first thought up some years ago by 0. P. Smith, a Seattle man. Smith devised an electrically motivated, movable machine which would lift his invalid wife at the touch of a button. The idea was taken over by the University of Washingtoi. engineering depart ment and W. A. Hanen, who formed the Invalid company. The model now being displayed operates somewhat on the prin ciple of an overhead crane. That 250-pound patient, wno normally takes the services of eight to 10 persons tn move, can be handled by one wasp-walsted nurse. She can, with the touch of a button, lift him from his bed, turn him over, place him in a sitting position or lower him Into a wheel chair, sitting, reclining or lying flat. The Invalid can be wheeled from room to room, too. fhua a patient can be lifted from his bed, taken to the operating table and re turned without being touched by any hand except the opera' Irg surgeon. The device csn be purchased outright for $3,(50 or rented by private persons or hospitals for $1.03 a day. TAX DOLLAR The above diagram shows how the city's 'ax dollar is spent. The diagram, prepared by City Manager M. W. Slankard and representing the proposed budget for the I9S0-5I tax year, shows that the street, fire and police departments make up half of the expenses. The remaining expenditures are listed for street lighting, sewage, buildings, library, parks end playground, miscellaneous, sinking funds, emergency, and ad ministration, in the amounts as shown. The city will vote Tuesday on whether or not to exceed the six per cent limitation in the amount of $71,997.17. Use Of Poison Gas Agents On Cancer Said Effective By FRANK CAREY Associated Press Science Editor WASHI.NGTON-Pi-A new and apparently more effective method has been announced of using tne "nitrogen mustards" one-time poison gas materials against hu man cancer. "Remarkable" shrinkage of treated tumors and complete re lief of pain in ten hopelessly ad vanced cases, were described by the American Cancer society. Seven of the ten have died but all responded to some extent to treatment. The shrinkage oc curred, however, only in tumors directly treated. Related, but non treated growths, were not dimin ished. The new method enables doctors to concentrate virtually the full wallop of the nitrogen mustards against certain tumors. Up to now. such chemicals have been injected into the veins of pa tients. Used that way, they have had only limited usefulness, be ing spread throughout the whole body, with diluted effect. Injected In Arteries Under the new method, they are injected not into veins but into arteries directly feeding specific cancer areas. Thus used, tncy have shown an ability in prelim inary trials to affect types of can cer unresponsive to the other technique. The scientists have launched a search for some other chemical which might make the new tech nique even more effective.- The "encouraging" results in ten hopeless malignancies of the brain, mouth, nose, neck and leg were reported by researchers of George Washington university's FOR SALE '39 Chevrolet Master 2 door. " Small Business Firms Training Disabled Yets Small-scale business enterprises are doing the major share of training disabled veterans on-the-job, the Veterans administration has disclosed. At the same time, the VA ex plained that other small businesses, not now training disabled veterans, may take part in the training pro gram by following simple proce dures involving a minimum of pa per work. Some 45.000 business and indus trial firms are now training handi capped veterans. The number of veterans being trained is fewer than two per establishment. Most of the training is being given by small firms, each with one, or at the most a few, disabled veteran trainees. With scarcely any exceptions, disabled veterans have been favor ably impressed with the progress made by their trainees. The need for training opportuni ties is still critical, the VA said. Any employer who is interested in setting up and conducting a job training program for disabled vet erans under Public Law 16 need merely contact the nearest VA re gional office. Specialists will give him prompt and expert assistance in setting up the program. After the VA ap proves the program, he will be offered an agreement under which he may train handicapped veterans. As snow gradually disappears inim tower slopes oi the ragged mountain peaKs northwest of here, hopes are rising that some trace may soon be found of a C-54 trans port that disappeared three months ago with 44 persons aboard. Air Force officials say that when the snow clears, some part of the big silver plane should become visible. Pilots flying the route through here to Alaska are con stantly on the lookout for signs of wreckage. The plane, earring 42 men, an expectant mother and her two- year-old son. was en route from Anchorage. Alaska, to Great Kalis, : Mont. It last reported over Snag, ' Y.T., 200 miles northwest of here. The greatest aerial search lnCini- d'an history failed to uncover fur , ther trace of it. ' The plane is believed to have struck a lofty peak in the St. Elias i range, south of the air route. department of surgery. Ihey warned that severe reac tions including convulsions can accompany the treatment, adding that injudicious use might produce the death of all normal tissue within a treated area. Very small doses are used. The American Cancer society. which supported the research and made public the report, said that one patient's brain tumor "had so impaired his vision that he was able to distinguish only light from dark. After treatment he was able to read large news print. Still Experimental Both institutions emphasized the technique is still experimental and for the present will be tried only in cases beyond help by oth er emthods. They cautioned further that In its present stage of development, at least, the method does not con stitute s chemical cure for can cer in the same way that surgery, radium or x-ray can sometimes cure the disease. And they said it was not ex pected to be of value to patients whose organic cancer had spread widely to other parts of the body. However, the university sur geons said further development of the technique might make it possible to control completely cer tain cancers -which had not yet spread. There is already evidence, they related, indicating that the meth od may be able to combat some localized cancers which do not re spond at all to x-ray thereby justifying the hope of avoiding ex tensive surgery in such cases. A still further possibility is the combined use of chemical and ra diation treatment to attack can cers resistant to either method alone. Opened Door "The procedure has opened the door' on a method of administering drugs which is unique in cancer treatment," declared Dr. Calvin T. Klopp, who directed the re search in the university's depart ment of experimental surgery. The department is under the gen eral direction of Dr. Brian Blades The university group said the nitrogen mustards may not be 'he ideal weapo.is for use with the new techniques. The scientists said they're already looking lur others. Development of the arterial method of injection was the result of an "accidental" occurence at the hospital. A woman was receiving nitro gen mustard treatment for a can cerous condition of the lymph nodes by the usual vein-injection method. By accident, the sub stance was injected into an artery feeding her arm. A sunburn-like redness snd blis tering and ulceration soon af fected her hand and forearm but in a few days it disappeared. This suggested that a nitrogen mustard, if injected into an artery "could produce, within the area supplied- by the artery, an intense reaction from which normal tis sue could recover. It also sug gested a new method for treating regional cancer which has an ac cessible arterial blood supply." Thus, the brain, head, neck and pelvis are considered the best possibilities. The upper abdomen and the chest are rated as less likely prospects.
