powers are not going to be driven
I out of Jerlin by next month's
threatened Communist demonstra
tion. In replies to news conference
questions, the secretary phrased
it this way: when all the commo
tion is over, the Western powers
will still be in the city.
Reporters had asked him about
the preparations by the United
States, Britain and France to meet
the threatened German Commu
nist youth putsch from eastern to
western Berlin May 27-29.
Acheson said that what the West
ern allies are going to do they will
do, and they will not announce it
beforehand.
Last weekend it was learned on
the highest authority that the West
ern nations hope to turn back the
threatened march by relatively
peaceful means, such as fire hoses
and tear gas, but are prepared if
necessary to' use rifle and ma
chine gun fire.
Acheson was told it had been
proposed that the three western
powers send a strong note to the
Soviet union.
He replied that he thought it had
been made quite clear in Wash
ington, London and Paris that the
Western powers' intention to re
main in Berlin is very firm in
deed. He added that all possible
steps to deal with the situation
have been considered.
Also at his news conference, Ach
eson: 1. Disclosed the United States
has "requested" the Communist
Romanian government to close
down a New York City office which
has been largely concerned with
the collection of pre-paid customs
duties on packages to Romania.
The action followed Romania's re
cent order shutting down opera
tions of the U.S. Information Ser
vice in Bucharest.
2. Said that all sorts of interst
had been aroused here by a pro- ' cause
posal from Premier Bidault of
France ten days ago for creation
of a "high council" of the Atlantic
powers. He said that so far as he
personally was concerned, he had
not made any decision as to what
steps ought to be taken to deal
with the developing organization of
Western Europe.

New Machine
To Take X-Rays
Of Your Teeth
SEATTLE, (tV Docs your
jaw ache, too, when the dentist
is taking x-ray pictures of your
teeth?
If so, take heart. The University
of Washington school of dentistry
has invented a machine that can
take a picture of all your teeth
in one-third the normal time. You
might even enjoy a ride you get
while the picture is being taken.
Like most all scientific items,
the process has a long-handled
name. Its "Panographic Radiogra
phy." The apparatus takes a panora
mic picture by scanning the en
tire dental arch. Tne patient is
in a fixed position in the chair,
as usual, the school of denistry
says. But the maching moves and
the chair revolves slowly.
While all this motion Is going on
the machine is taking a full-mouth
X-ray. using only three films.
They show the upper dental arch, !
the lower dental arch and the
crouns of both upper and lower
teeth. i
The present conventional method j
requires 18 or more separate pic
tures. For that many pictures your
aching jaw is open at least 30
minutes. The three-minute method ,
is all finished in less than 10
minutes.
It also saves the dentist pro
cessing time and stoiage space.
In the process a narrow beam
of X-radiation is directed through
the tissues to a specially-shaped
lead-backed lilm. A pulsating cur- ,
rent eliminates blurring as the den
tal arch is scanned.
The movement of the patient and 1
the X-ray tube must be precisely t
synchronized for proper exposure ,
of the film. To accomplish the pre- ,
cise result, the university techni
cians utilized parts of a washing
machine, a motor from an old
film-drier, a surplus dental chair
and X-ray machine and the gears
from an operating la.)le.
X-nerimcnts were conducted on
a skull. Live patients are now being
used.
A new, completely automatic
unit is being constructed.
