(Jfi Nevada's grasshoppers are having a tough time of it these days. Three camps have been set up in the remote northwestern part of the state, with men and equip ment worauix overtime to spray poison on millions of young hoo pers hatching from their eggs. Those that escape the insecti cides will find poisoned bran to feed on as they mature. Federal, state and county agen cies this year waging an all-out battle against the migratory grass hoppers which started as a small band in Central Nevada 10 years ago. During the decade, the hop pers have increased phenomenally in numbers and have flown north west with the prevailing winds un til they now rover a million acres in northern Nevada and southern Oregon. During their migration so far, the hoppers have done uncalculated damage to Nevada ranges, but they haven't had an opportunity to eat their way through agricultural areas. This is why the fight Is so heavy this year. The hoppers will start migrating again i. July further toward Oregon and northern Cali fornia agricultural areas. Before enlisting in the marine corps in September, 1M8, Malone attended Myrtle Creek high school. Retail Sales Tax Is Proposed For Eugene EUGENE. April 24 Wind ing up a month of deliberation, Eugene's 1950-51 budget committee has recommended that the city council ask the voters to approve in November a one-half of one per cent local retail sales tax to be used exclusively to offset property taxes. Adoption of the sales tax, as pro posed by the budget group, could not come in time to reduce the 1950-51 city levy, estimated as 25 4 mills on the basis of the city's present valuation.
