ft Worker-Job Contact Aim Of Service Agency (Ed. note: This U the firit in a icriet of articles on the Oregon State Employment service designed to Inform the public concerning its wide facilities for offering services to the community, employer and the worker.) As the central job agency for a rapidly growing community, the local office of the Oregon State Em ployment service, located at 437 N Jackson, performs many signifi cant services for the general pub lic, employers and workers. Free to everyone alike, the Roseburg office with a trained staff of 12 persons is thoroughly equipped to bring together the qualified worker and the suitable job. With a "six-point" plan as the foundation of its forward-looking program, the employment service is interested primarily in the ef fective placement of the job-seeker and in cooperating with the commu nity and employer to meet all kinds of employment problems. Behind the local representatives are not only the resources of Oregon's un employment commission but also the combined actions of some 1,800 offices of 51 state snd territorial agencies throughout the nation. Briefly here are the six points around which the Oregon State Employment service program of service is built (they will be ex plained in detail in later articles): 1. Placement of the worker matching the applicant's qualifica tions against job requirements. 2. Special services to veterans 5A 3 Atb.ee farm -If) POMST UANP fcNOJSM LUMBIR. (.V The state board of control Thursday awarded the contr ct for the 10 story state office building in Port land, but it hopes to add one or two more stories to the $2,500,000 structure. Construction can begin immedi ately. But the board will ask for bids on adding one or two more stories. The board probably will add the extra one or two stories If it can be done with the money available. The architects, Dougan. Heims snd Caine, told the board that they are sure one more story could be added without boosting the cost be yond the S2.50O.0O0 which the legis lature authorised to construct the bulletin" The board said if it adds one more story, there would be enough space tor all state departments in Portland, with a little space left over. The second extra story wouldn't be finished now, but would be finished when there is future demsnd for it. The main contract, $1,155,447, went to Ralph and HorwiU, Port land. The $174,690 electrical con tract was awarded to Watco Elec tric company, Portland, while Ken dall Heating company of Portland won the $165,000 plumbing and heating contract. Westinghouse Electric corpora tion was awarded the $130,680 ele vator contract. ' 'j-. April 21, 1950 The News-Review, Roseburg, Off.
