I .F Fric tion arising from purchases of British Columbia lumber, fruit and other products with Economic Co operation administration funds was bared by Oregon and Washington delegatea at the Pacific Northwest Trade association convention here. At the same time, Washington's Governor Arthur B. M. Langlie delivered a blast at United Statea government trade policies which, he said, sacrifice interests of the Pacific Northwest. "The purpose of EGA should be to assist European countries that will play fair with ua in getting bark to multilateral free enter prise trade." said the governor. "Where ECA dollars are avail-" able apparently instructions go slong with the dollara to buy any where but in the United Slates." Danger aignals of this policy, he said, were evident in Washing ton where fruit industries were "in a serious plight," lumber out look was "not encouraging," pulp exports "practically zero," and flour exports "in a bad way." S. bought only 3300,000,000 worth from Canada. "How long is this going to last?" he asked. "It may last aa long as ECA tssists other countries. Un less the U.S. is willing to extend credits, something is going to hap pen." John P. Hrrber of Seattle ar gued that Canada waa able to buy from the U. S. because of ECA money mad available to other countries." "No," said Thomas Braidwood of Vancouver, B.C., "Canada has done a good Job of ita own in as sisting needy countries and had not received one buffalo nickel from lend-lease during the war." "Canada wants to trade with the U. S. but you must provide us with a market." The panel passed a resolution asking the PNWTA directors to set up a committee to atudy the trade friction between the two countries. Earlier, A. Bmce Robertson told HEART ATTACK OR INDIGESTION? Potatoes raco-Liftod To Doctivt Consumort SACRAMENTO. Calif.. Potatoes out here are acouiring glamorous new look and at the expense of consumers. S. R. Whipple, a California ag riculture official, told about it: Some operators dye cheap, old potatoes to make them look like new or higher quality varieties. They treat cheap sweet potatoea to look like expensive velvets. They do it with a dye contained in wax sold aa a preservative. The dye in most cases is not injurious. It a legal to dye or we potatoea, if the consumer is informed. But if spuds are dyed and resold aa quality potatoes, his agenta will crack down, Whipple aaid.
