Primary Polls
Must Operate On
Standard Time
SALEM. in -All of Oregon
polling places in the May IS pri
mary election will have to oper
ate on standard time, regardless ot
whether the communities in which
they are located are on daylight
saving time, state elections Chief
Pave O'Hara says.
This means the polls will be
open from 9 a.m. to p.m. in
communities with daylight sav
ing time. They will be open from
1 a.m. to I p.m. in those with
standard time.
O'Hara said the issue was settled
by a recent supreme court de
cision which ordered a new trial in
a Clatsop county school election
case. In that case, the election
was held on daylight aaving time.
O'Hara said the state law pro
vides the polls be open from S
a.m. to I p.m., and that that means
standard time. He said state law
prevails over any local ordinance
providing for daylight time.
