Baaed on the Bible versa, I Co rinthian!, 13:13, Harvia developed the theme, "And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity." Ha declared charity la not giv ing, but aharing and that the Bible and other great literature teaches us the value of charitable acta. "We should feel privileged that we're In a position to be charita ble," he declared. "We must give with our hearts as well as our hands." The Juvenile delinquency prob lem came In for more attention Tuesday night, as speaker Bob Al len declared, "The problem ahould be handled by the courta to the parenta, not the courta to the child." Ha developed the them made famous by Father Flanagan of Boys' Town that "no bad child waa ever born," saying children are subjects of the environment in which they were born. Allen quoted local authoritiea to Indicate that "no great Juvenile delinquency problem now exists" but said this area aeems cognizant of the need for combatting delin quency. However, he cited expe riences of city police to show that opposition of many parenta makes the Roseburg curfew law "unwork able." He also raised a queation aa to the workability of the county Juvenile office, saying he had been unable to find an answer to the question "What are the qualifica tions of this county's juvenile offi cer?" Funtral Services Stt Sunday For Clydt Dubell Funeral services for Clyde Du bell, Oakridge and former Suther lin police chief who waa killed early Sunday, will be held Sun day, March 26 at the Sutherlin Methodist church, wttn Rev. Wil liam Johnson, pastor of the Oak ridge Methodist church, officiating. Interment will be in tha Masonic cemetery in Canyonville. Concluding services at tha grave will be held by the AF and AM lodge. No. 16, of Oakland, of which he waa a member. Arrangements are in charge of Stearna mortu ary, Oakland. Dubell met hia death from gun shot wounds about 1 a. m. Sun day when called to the home of Jamea Lloyd Thompson to quell a fracas after Thompson alleg edly had fired at his young wife and Herbert Looney with a gun. Thompson is being held in the Lane county Jail on a secona ae iree murder chsrge. Dubell wss born at Canyonville April 23, 1905 and apent a large part ot nis lifetime in mat vicinity, He was chief of police at Sutn erlin for a if yeara before be coming cliier of police at oakridge. He waa married to Bertha E. Northern at Albany, Ore., Dec. 17, 1924. Besides his widow he is survived by two sons. Lewis D. and Richard A., both of Sutherlin; a aister, Mra. Zella LeBlanc, and a brother, Arthur Dubell, both of Canyon, ville; and a grandchild. Gerretson of the Denn-Gerretaon company, Roseburg, accompanied by Mr. and Mra. Allan McLennan of Winston, motored to Portland Sunday, March 12, to attend the Northern Hardware Wholesalers' convention. The convention, which waa held March 12, 13 and 14 waa attended bv dealera of all western states and was reported by those attending to be "or great interest ' both as to "displays and excellent spokes men." Among them were Senator Austin Flegel and E. C. Sammons, president of th U.S. National bank of Portland. Both families returned to their homes on Tuesday. Ttie McLennane in describing their trip, applauded the entertainment furnished by the convention which waa highlighted by banquets both nights that they were in Portland. The possibility of a flood loomed last weekend. Ttie South Umpqua, swollen by last week's downpour, reached a high peak and waa al most out of banka in several places in this region. Ditches and email streama overflowed, covering coun try roads at aome points and alow ing traffic, but none became Im passable. Mrs. Elva Forrest ia reported to be Improving after a aeriea of confining Illnesses. Her first mis fortune waa to be claimed by mumpa, which left her with a aevere throat infection aa an after math. Later the infection went into her blood atream. Mra. Forrest ia employed with Lester's Gift and Model ahop in Roaeburg. Over the weekend Mr. and Mra. Dwight of Winston entertained Mr. and Mra. Troy Ladd of Reedsport. Mra. Helen Duncan haa enrolled in the Oregon history classes being taught in the Roseburg Junior high school Saturday morning of each week for a period of eight weeks. A graduate of the Aberdeen Teach era' college in South Dakota, Mra. Duncan ia unable to teach in this state until her license is validated by a course in Oregon history, Thia course is offered by the extension service through the Uni versity of Oregon and is primarily intended aa an undergraduate course. Mr. and Mrs. Noel Conklin have returned to their home in Winston after a visit with their daughter in the Mt. Shasta area in northern California. Among those who "got away from it all" (referring to the mug gy weather: over the weekend were Mr. and Mrs. Ted Peterson and small daughter, Vickl, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Burks. They all traveled to Bandon and report "simply beautiful weafiter," in spite of the storm warning forecast. Ernest Pruitt, who recently un derwent a tonsilectomy, has re turned to his position aa foreman at the Umpqua Plywood mill in Green valley. Mrs. Harry Brown has returned to her home in Camaa Valley after spending several days visiting in the home of Mrs. Helen Duncan of this community. At one time Mrs. Brown operated a large hatch ery in Winston, later moving with her husband to Suttierlin where to gether they ran a similar estab lishment. They now have a ranch at Camas Valley. Sacks, Local Resident For 40 Years, Passes Merden Sacke, TT, well-known resident of Roseburg, died at a local hospital March 21 following a short illness. H waa born at Beverly, W. Va., on Aug. 28, 1872, and waa married there to Anna Myrtle Morriaon in 1897. He came to Roseburg from West Virginia about 40 years ago and waa for many yeara engaged In black smith work. Mr. Sacka was a member of Aerie No. 1497, Fra ternal Order of Eaglea, Roseburg. Surviving are hia widow, Mra Anna Sacka, Roaeburg; two daugh ters, Mra. Alma Eggleston, Port land, and Mra. Edna Zimmerman, Alameda, Calif.; a aon, Jerome B. Sacka, Roaeburg. He ia also survived by a brother, Perry Sacka Valley Bend., W. Va., and one granddaughter. - Hia body haa been removed to th Long k Orr Mortuary and funeral arrangementa will he an nounced later upon receipt of word from relativea. Music Assembly Dated At Jr. High Thursday A music assembly is scheduled at th Roseburg Junior high school auditorium Thursday from 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. The public ia invited. The program will include aix numbers by the junior band, di rected by Clyde Moore, and addi tional selections on the Hammond organ by Mra. Paul Geddea. The band numbers will include: Rifle Rangers march, Voyager ov erture. Tango, Strauss waltzes. Sons of Liberty march, and Little Jumbo march. Winston Meeting Will Talk On Church Project An open meeting will be held at Howard's store at Winston Thurs day at 8 p. m. in an effort to creat a church for that commu nity. The meeting ia sponsored by the First Christian church of Roseburg. A complete program will be of fered and the public is invited to attend. Firemen's Instructors Dot Conference Hero A one-day fireman instructors' conference for this area will be held at Roseburg from 9 a.m. to S p.m. Tuesday, March 28. Announce ment of the conference was receiv ed today by Roaeburg Chief Wil liam "Dutch" Miila from the State Board of Education department of vocational educational training committee, Elmer H. Halstead and Jack Hayea. The agenda will include: Accept able atandards for fir department training, improvement of instruc tion, local training problema and plana for an advanced training pro gram. Chiefs and instructors are urged by the committee to attend this conference for a discussion of their ideaa and problema in order to improve th training program. Need, Hoover Says NEW YORK, March 22 -UK Former President Herbert Hoover aays the federal government "needs more than an annual bouae cleaning." "There are corners where the dust, the cobwebs and the red tape have not been cleaned out for at least SO years," he declar ed yesterday. Mr. Hoover, head of th com mission on reorganization ot the executive branch of government, spoke at a women's rally of the New York Citizena committee for th Hoover Report. PIPE CONTROLLIO The rural fire truck waa called to a house fire on Keasey road al 11:20 a. m. today, but the fire was reported by fire department radio to be under control. Name of the owner of the property had not been learned at press time. Horse Stealing Charge City's First In 20 Years CINCINNATI, March The horse and buggy daya have long aince passed but Hamilton county authorities today were hold ing a man on a charge of stealing a horse. They said it waa the first charge of that kind here in 20 years. The horse was stolen from a salea company barn and found at the Carthage fairgrounds. Prison Term Meted Far Manhole Covers' Theft LITTLE ROCK, Ark.. March 22. IJpyA man her waa aentenced yesterday to the penitentiary for two yeara for theft of 67 manhole covera. The defendant, B. J. Balton, pleaded guilty. Police said Balton related he hauled the heavy covers by truck and aold them as junk for $360. The covera had a replacement valu of more than S4,000. SELLS BUSINESS M. S.
