In Opposing N.Atlantic Union WASHINGTON. Morch 14 Senator Kefauver (D-Tenn) Mon day accused the State department of a "shocking and alarming lack of vision" for its opposition to s proposed union of North' Atlantic nations. "If we drift into another war,'' Kefauver said, "it will be because those responsible for keeping the peace lacked vision: because mea sures were not taken to remove the cloud while there was still time." - Kefauver ursed the Senate to approve a resolution calling on this country to summon a convention of Atlantic pact Democracies for the purpose of discussing a federal union. He made clear that he thinks Congress should ignore the State department's advice on the matter. "After all, we are close to the people," Kefauver declared. "Such Is not the case with the personnel of the department of State." He accused the department of having fumbled the waging of the cold war, commenting that "we merely hold our own in- Lurope, while we are losing much in Asia." Opposition Explained Kefauver s speech was prompt ed by the testimony of Deputy L'n-der-secretary of State Dean Rusk and -Assistant Secretary John D. Hickerson before a Senate foreign relations subcommittee. The? opposed the Atlantic union resolution sponsored by the Ten nessee lawmaker and 19 other sen ators, on the ground that it poses a number of questions which must be settled first. Kefauver said the effect of Hick- erson's remarks is that "the State department has decided that the people are not ready for this con vention, and that we must have faith in its judgment." The sen aotr added: How imprudent, as the State department implicity does, to as sume that the next 10 montns win be falrweather sailing "How dangerously rash to con clude that we must hasten to ex plore every way to make the hyr rogen bomb, but that we have no time to explore the free federal way to keep it from wrecking the worhV "It is our constitutional func tion,'' he told the senate, "rather than that of the State department, to decide how ready the people are. We are in a much better position to judge the pulse-beat of the people than is any diplomat." H.W.Wilki$on. Logging Operator, Dies Suddenly Hush William Wilkison. 58. suf fered a heart attack at his logging csmp nesr Myrtle Creek Sunday, March 12, and died a short time later. He had been engaged in the logging industry for the last 25 years. At the time of hia death he was an owner in the H. W. Wilkison & Sons Logging Co. He had lived in Oregon for 27 years and was engaged in business in Forest Grove for 15 years, snd In Grants Psss snd Eugene for five yesrs each before moving to Winston s year ago. Micelli To Head Voting Urge Campaign Mrs. Christina Micelli of Rose burg has been appointed county campaign coordinator for the Citi sens Non Partisan Registration committee, County Judge D. N. Busenbark announced today. Mrs. Micelli's appointment to the non-partisan, non-profit organiza tion came in response to a letter to Judge Busenbark from tha or ganization's stste chairman, Ed W. Eggen of Portland. Purpose of the committee is to encourage registration of all quali fied Oregon residents by April 18 snd to encourage voting in both the primary and general elections. The committee is working in co operation with various other or ganizations. Mrs. Micelli has long been ac tive in political affairs and two years sgo waa a candidate from this district for stste representa tive. At present, she is chairman of the Douglas County Democratic Central committee. Mrs. C. Jensen Is Claimed By Death Mrs. Clarice Jensen, 34, resident of Roseburg for a year snd a half, died March 13 after a lingering illness. She was born Sept. 28, 1915, in Chamberlain, S. Dak., and came to Roseburg from Mitchel, S. Dak., where she had lived a number of years. Surviving are two sons, Peter A. snd Robert L., both of Roseburg; three daughters, Helen L., Linda Lou snd Judith Ann, sll of Rose burg: her fsther snd step-mother, Mr. snd Mrs. John S.
