He had made his home at Oakridge for the past eight years. Surviving are the widow; s daughter, Mrs. Maxine Williams Juneau, Alaska; and two sons, Joe Morgan, Roseburg, and B. F. Mor gan Jr., Portland. He also leaves three grandchildren. Funeral services havt not yet been arranged. SPECIAL LIBRARY HOURS The Roseburg public library will be open from 3 to ( p m. on Wasn ington's birthdsy. Feb. 22, Miss Muriel Mitchell, librarian, has an nounced. The pecan is the official Texas state tree. Autos GREEN SCHOOL DEDICATED New Douglas County Structure Boasts Radiant Heat, Indirect Lighting, Modern Lunch Kitchen By MRS. GEORGE BACHER Open house was held recently at the Green school in Green valley. during which time the building was accepted by tne scnooi ooara ana dedicated to the purpose of further ing education in tne Mate ot ure gon. The building itself is t work of art and the community feels that the contractor, E. A. Shannon of Roseburg, is to be complimented. Inside and out a streamlined effect has been reached and kept in color snd design (as well as the sched uling of classes and recreational facilities so ably handled by the principal, W. C. Stonebreaker). Entering by means of a door way leading into a small foyer, one is immediately impressed by the combination of warm and cool colors, skillfully blended so as to be "useful ss well as ornamental '' Not only are they pleasing to the eye as beauty goes, but they are kind to the eye as well, being done in soft tones of tana snd grays with splashea of yellow in the kitch en. The first adoor to the right leads to the school's library look ing fairly complete at present but which ia "being catalogued and readjusted to conform with state requirements," to quote Stone breaker. Just off the library Is the principal's office equipped with the usual "standard equipment" of which Douglas county schools can so rightfully boast these days electric clocks, adding machines, telephones snd the comparatively new buzzer systems by which means the principal and teachers may contact each other without it e aid of the once necessary "mes senger." Next in order is the modern kitchen adjoining the cafeteria Mrs. Emery Williams manages the kitchen, with the sid of volunteer help from mothers who have chil dren in school. This system is re ported to be working out very nice ly with the sid of the P-TA. Later it is expected that it will be nec essary to provide a larger cafete ria and kitchen, because the com munity has "boomed" to the point where some 22S students now at tend the school. The Green school district embraces Green valley, Happy Valley and Glengary. A sharp left turn takes us through double doors into the lar;e auditorium, so arranged that it serves as a gatherine place for residents of the community when school programs are presented, and doubles as well as a temporary gymnasium during school hours There is a piano and a portable stage and it is here that the boys' and girls' physical education classes are conducted. Also, the school's schedule has been arrang ed to permit time for such activi ties as folk dancing, group sing ing and a Girls' club. The fiist scnooi bus leaves at 2 p.m., taking with it the first, second and third graders. The teachers of these grades then volunteer their time to assist teachers of the upper grades in these classes. Of interest in the auditorium are the large sky-lights. Of a pale blue green in color, against the sun shine yellow of tne walls, they louic much like the sky itself. This illu sion lingers even at night when the lights (a sort of modern ver sion of chandeliers) are turned in These lights boast 300 watt bulbs and are of the indirect variety. This ssme system is used through out the entire school. The ceiling of the suditorium, ss well as in the rest of the rooms, is of acousti cal sound-proof tile. Radiant heat is another added attraction. Double doors lead out of the auditorium into a long hall, amp.y supplied with drinking fountains and sanitary and adequate rest rooms. The first door to the right of this grand sweep of hall leads into the first grade room, which is taught by Mrs. Tillies Borgen o! Roseburg. Sandboxes and doll houses are much in evidence here, and it is interesting that "black boards" are no longer black! They are a creamy white and the once white chalk is replsred by pastel. Pussywillows sdorned the room. Secondly, the second grade room. Mrs. W. C. Stonebreaker, of Win ston is in charge here. A displiv of leaves spoke of biology, and piggy banks (made by the stud dents) and red cross rolls dominat ed the scene. Here, as in all the other class rooms, a lavatory was provided for the youngsters. And then there is a combination first and second grade room, tak ing care of the overflow from both Mrs. Borgen's snd Mrs. Stone breaker's rooms. Here amid toys, puzzles, crowded bulletin boards and a sea of shining faces is found the teacher, Mrs. I.eona Dickinson, who resides in Roseburg. Silhou ettes of Lincoln and lacy valentines were tucked here and there. Advancing down the hall to Mrs. Stuart Hayes' room, we find the third grade. Ages of the studeratt have advanced here and we find indications of work of a little mote intricate nature. We've graduated from the gather - round - the - table children stage now, and the new type adjustable desks in this room are eye-catching. A miniature gar den of potted plants suns itscll in one of the numerous big, sunny windows. Next comes the fourth grade under the direction of Miss Jo Ann Bolsinger of Roseburg. On the black-boards (creamy white hoards! ) were thumbtacked list alt er list of vitamins and "energy giving" foods as paraphrased from fourth grade physiology texts The room was made cheerful by potted daffodils, pilgrims of spring! Mrs. Margaret Austin of Rose burg is the teacher for the film grade room. Maps of every descrip tion appeared here, as well as ome paintings worthy of mention "Blue Boy," a perennial favorite rested on the west wall as if s "picture memory" . contest had been recently in progress. In the sixth grsde room themej seemed to have stolen the day. some appearing very lengthy, all idone by students. Commendable maps, also a geographic accom plishment of the students outlined the bulletin boards. Mrs. Carrie Tison of Glengary teaches this group. Harry Wilson's room (he teaches the seventh grade also resides in Winston) was leaa decorative These students have passed the -piay stage" ana are busying them selves wiin comparisons ot adjec tives and conjugations of verbs The rooms reeked of higher educa tion. Lastly, we come to S. Rockwell's eighth grsders. "Moby Dick" had been done in miniature, life-like figures, mounted snd set up for public inspection. Worthy of men tion were tne scenic views painted on the windows. The tour of the classrooms over, again double doors lead us to the extreme western end of the build ing. Here, it is planned that a large play area will be prepared for the primary grades in the near future. Space will be made avail able on the north for the upper grades. Playground equipment is scheduled to arrive soon, including a merry-go-round, slide, overhead ladder, three horizontal bars an i eight swings. For the protection of all youngsters, Stonebraker as sures parents that both upper and lower grade teachers will be on hand at all times to supervise play as well as to remain in the halls of the building to prevent acci dents. A good school paper is edited regularly, too. Trustees for Green district are Elmer Lander, Clyde Fullerton and Bob Adams. Fire Escape Law Cited By Mills, Department Chief Fire Chief William Mills today reminded owners and operators of the state fire escape laws requir ing "proper enclosure" of stair ways, elevator shafts, dumb-waiters, light wells, etc., in public buildings of three or more stories occupied for sleeping purposes. The laws were enacted by the state legislature in 1947 with the provision they be complied with by July S, 1950. According to Mills, the legisla tion was enacted in this state in an attempt to prevent such tragic occurances as the fires in the La- Salle hotel in Chicago and Atlanta's Winecotf hotel and the hospital fires in Illinois snd lows. He said loss of life by fire in Oregon is on the increase but hen not reached the proportions expe rience- Dy otner suites. The li.e escape laws are an effort to insure resicW;ts of this state against trag ic destruction of life and property. Chief Mills said he will assist all property owners and managers in their efforts to comply with the law. He urged prompt action by those wno come under its provi sions in view of the coming dead line. "Bird Man" Will Offer Program At Junior High "A Bit of Nature Brought In doors."
