f 5200 DINERS f Big Democrat Dinner Poses Many Problems By ARTHUR EDSON : WASHINGTON -UP At T: p.m., on the night of Feb. 18, a green light will flash in the Nation al Guard armory here, and 550 waiters will dash out. . Thereupon, 5,200 diners, faithful Democrats who are affluent enough to shell out $100 a plate, will start chomping away at the Jefferson Jackson day dinner. It sounds easy, written that way. ' But President Truman, who only las to make the main speech, has a snap compared with the chore of getting the dinner arranged. At least, that's the view of May flower and Statler hotel officials,' who are splitting the catering job for the big feed. ,' The hotel people have a heap of MUctk and assorted data to Vv thefe past, To begin with, there's the geog raphy problem, . The armory is a monster of a building in southeast Washington. The food will have to be cooked in the hotels, four miles away. ' Then there's this additional wor ry: The night before the banquet Georgetown and George Washing ton universities will be using the armory for basketball. - T- So, lurking along the sidelines, as intent on the game as any cheerleader, will be a group of cleaning people, table-setter-uppers and other functionaries. The mo ment the final whistle blows, they'll spring into action. By daylight the last traces ol Life Saving Medal To Be Given toy Scout EUGENE, Feb. 9 (iP) Governor Douglas McKay will present a gold life saving medal to life scout Le- Boy D. Mann, 14, of Sultan, Wash., at a ceremony tonight to the Springfield high school. The youth, a former member of troop 37, Springfield, was listed last October by the national office of Boy Scouts of America as one of four scouts in the nation entitled to receive the gold medal for sav ing a life. The boy rescued Gerald LaPlant, 15, from drowning in the Thurston siougn last June. Tkurs., Pfc f, 1MB The New-fcvirw, t,etabur$. Ore. 11 basketball will be scrubbed from the big hall, and 520 tables will have been set up. i At 10 a.m., the table linen and the silverware will begin to so on the tables. By 4 p.m., the food will oegm to arrive, to he Kept warm on 12 special charcoal burners. Waiters To Ride A special fleet of buses will bring the waiters, the 75 captains, and 50 stewards. Then at the great moment, Jack Weschler, the maitre d'hotel for Statler, or Max Sterner, the ditto for Mayflower, will push the button that will light the special light, and the dinner will be on. The job of feeding 5500 people calls for considerable equipment, of course. Such as: 16,000 salad plates, 11.000 teaspoons, 1,100 ice buckets, 25,000 ice cubes, 1,100 ash trays, 5,200 wine glasses, etc. And onco the dinner is over, the hotel people aren't through, either. They have to hustle right in and clean the joint up. An automobile snow moves into me armory we next day.
