UP) Senator McMahon (D-Conn) hinted Tuesday that others may be in volved in the case of Klaus Fuchs. the British scientist accused ol giving atomic secrets to Russia He said investigations are going on in both the United States and Britain. The top atomic man in Congress told reporters that "further rami fications of this matter are being worked on by the FBI here nd by the British intelligence service in Britain." Asked if this meant others were involved, besides Fuchs, McMahon replied: "Some times common sense dic tates arrests not be made immed iately." He declined to say whether be thought new arrests are likely. The senator also said that FBI reports show Fuchs had been in finitely sympathetic" to Commun ist ideas since he was a young man. McMahon talked with reporters after a long session of the Senate House atomic committee with .1. Edgar Hoover, chief of the Fed eral Bureau of Investigation. Mc Mahon heads the committee. He said "there can be no doubt' from the FBI's . investigation that Fuchs had wide knowledge of the "so-called hydrogen bomb. McMahon said he feels that dc finitely Fuchs gave highly secret atomic information to Russia. New Drug For TB Undergoing Test . CLEVLELAND, VP) Tibione A new drug being tested against tuberculosis in 24 Veterans Admin istration hospitals was described here at a meeting of 100 drug manufacturers. Dr. Charles E. Dutchess, medi cal director of Schenley Labora tories, Inc., discussed the drug for the research and development sec tion of the American Drug Manu facturers association. He emphasized Tibione current ly as being 'thoroughly investi gated" in this country and indicat ed it probably would not be avail able for general use before late this year. Tibione has been tested in Wes tern Germany, he reported, where it was used on some 10,000 tuber culosis patients since September. 1947. The drug first was developed in Germany, where it is known as Contegcn. Chenically, it is 4 acetyl - amino - benzaldehydethio semicarbazone. Tubercle bacilli which can re sist tibione have not yet been de tected in tests, Dr. Dutchess said The new drug is taken in doses only one-tenth the amount of strep tomycin, and has been used with the latter drug in cases where streptomycin - resistant tubercle bacilli have developed, he said. It is estimated that American workers turn out goods worth an average of roughly $1.50 for ach hour work. Senator O'Mahoney Says Businesses Go Begging For Lack Of Venture Funds By SIGRID ARNE WASHINGTON--D-Senator O'Mahoney (D-Wyo) says: "Busi nesses are going begging for lack of venture capital. The private enterprise system is .starving for capital." O'Mahoney headed a committee in December to find out how many people were hanging on to their dollars instead of investing them in coiporations, or putting them out to start new businesses, and why. When fewer oeonle invest money fewer workers nave a cnance lor new jobs and Uncle Sam loses the chance to collect taxes from grow ing business. Many witnesses before O'Ma honey's committee said that the tax collector was taking too many of the dollars that better paid men used to have left over when they had paid the family bills. The National City bank of New York studied the federal income taxes paid by people who earned $25,000 or more in 1928 and 1948. Comparatively few families have been added to the upper income brackets in the 20 years even though the national income tripled in thai time, the study shows. Further, while the national in come increased three times, upper bracket incomes jumped by only about a ninth. But the government took more than four, times as much taxes from the top group in 1948, so this group took a swift plunge in what was left. Like all the rest of us, this group was hit by another blow. The dollar has had less and less value in the last 20 years. The bank says the average $27,623 earn ed by the upper income bracket after taxes was really worth only $1,978 in 1948. Industrial experts now figure that it costs $8,000 of somebody's investment money to put just one worker on the job. Last Thursday Senator O'Ma honey proposed a plan to find some new risk capital. He explained a bill, which he will introduce, to a news confer ence. He szid he would like to see some "capital bank corporations" set up inside the federal reserve system. They would lend to small business. They would get their money from any bank, financial institution, or individual who felt like buying the corporations' bonds. He added that he would give these new corporations a help that the old investing crowd doesn't have: He would exempt them from federal taxes for 15 years. Oregon Banker Sees No Chance For Monopoly SAr FRANCISCO, Feb. 8. UP) An Oregon banker testified at Monday's Federal Reserve board hearing into Transamerica Corp that he knew of no way whereby anyone could obtain a banking monopoly in that state. The witness, E. C. Sammons, is president of the U. S. National bank of Portland, largest bank in Oregon and strongest competit or of the First National Bank of Portland, of which Transamerica owns the majority stock. The federal board has charged that Transamerica's commercial banking operations have reached a monopolistic tendency. Sammons was called to the stand as a defense witness by Samuel B. Stewart Jr., Transamerica a t torney. Asked the direct monopoly ques tion, Sammons replied "I know of now way by which anyone could get a monopoly. Our bank is not for sale to anyone." Most of Stewart's questions seek ing to develop the banking compet ition situation in Oregon resulted in objections by J. Leonard Town send, Federal Reserve Board at torney. Rudolph M. Evans, hear ing officer, sustained most of the objections. At one point Stewart expressed belief that Evans "has definitely taken sides" in the case. He said he intended to comment upon this later.
