HAMLIN RHS Band Bills Thursday Concert A dozen concert pieces and spe cialty musical numbers will be In cluded on the program of the Roseburg senior high school band concert scheduled tor Thursday night at 8:15 in the senior high school auditorium. In addition to regular concert numbers, several selections will be played by the "German band," trombone quartet and saxaphone quartet. Featured during the eve ning will be Dick Cumpston, saxa phone soloist. Another special number, the popular concert, "March of the Stoelmen," will present trombone and cornet quartets. Special rehearsals and night practice sessions in the home of Band Director E. G. Stiles have been on schedule for band mem bers preparing for the first con cert of the current year. UB Unemployment jumped 991,000 in January, sending the number of jobless to 4,480,000 highest since the war. Secretary of Commerce Saw yer, announcing the develop ment, issued a statement which said: "A sizable Increase In unem ployment Is to be expected be tween December and January be cause of seasonal developments. , "It is noteworthy that indus trial employment did not appear to be materially affected. A year ago, industrial layoffs were an important factor in the rise of un. employment." The number with jobs 58,. 947,000 in January dropped 1, 609,000. The full force of this decline did not show up In unemploy ment, however, because many of I those losing jobs dropped out of the labor market, at least tern I porarily. A regulation to be issued April 1 will bar Veterans with cer tain exceptions from the gov ernment's trailing and education program unless thoy enroll by July 25, 1951. Further rules changes will make it hard for Veterans to change their present courses, and will prevent them, after complet ing one course, from starting an other, even though they have some unused school credit. The Veterans readjustment act specifle-3 that a Veteran must start his schooling .vithln Ion, years after discharge or after July 25, 1947, the official end of the war, whichever is later.
