Revenue Upped In 1949 Washington State college, in a report to the state advertising commission. The 1949 total was $7,000,000 more than the tourist expenditure for 1948 and $27,000,000 more than in 1947. William G. Ives of Spokane, member of the state advertising commission said an analysis of the report indicated that more than $4,000,000 of the 1949 expen diture went to the state in gaso line and sales taxes. The state advertising budget was $275,000 for the last biennfum and has been reduced to $250,000 for the current two-year period. The report included these fig ures for separate categories: Meals, $41,000,000; sleeping ac commodations, $30,000,000; amusements, $11,800,000; automo tive supplies, $10,100,000; retail stores, $7,000,000, and miscellan eous, $22,900,000. All figures are approximate. The number of visitors was list ed as 574,000 entering the state by automobile and another 100, 000 coming by public transporta tion. Explosion On Planet Mars Draws Eyes Of Scientists ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. UP) A worldwide watch of the planet Mars has been ordered by sicentists following reports of a "terrific explosion there Jan. 16. World Director Haas of the As sociation of Lunar and Planetary Observers, said the work is being concentrated In western Germany, where the planet can be observed petter. ; Haas. University of New Mex ico mathematics Instructor, said he had received a report on the explosion from a Japanese mem ber of. the association. The reported explosion pushed a greyish cloud 50 miles in the air and the explosion diameter was measured at approximately 900 miles, the scientist said. He described height and color of the cloud as "remarkable." Haas said the reported explo sion was not visible in the Unit ed States because of the position of Mars at the time. The University of New Mexico scientist said . "we have often seen white or yellow-white pro jections on Mars, but nothing of that sort has been seen since 1933." PORTLAND, Jan. 37,-m Physicians, defending against the federal government's monopoly charge In pre-paid care, slapped today at what they called "inter ference" by the National Hospital association. Dr. Lester M. Lehrbach, Rose burg, said in federal court that the association "seem to feel that the records belong to them in stead of us. They are continually asking for information which takes considerable time to dig out and give to them." He said he had so much trouble collecting that he no longer ac cepts the association's pre-pay-ment tickets from his patients. He said that in 1944 or 1945 two of his patients injured in a Roseburg lumber operation were moved to Portland and he had trouble collecting his fee. 'I was very irate when I found the two men had gone to Portland," he said. Philip Marcus, head counsel for the government, said it was the lumber company, not the hospi tal association, which moved the men. Dr. R. M. McKeown, Coos Bay, also attacked the National Hos pital association.
