Applications To Adopt Children Swamp Society By ANN REED BURNS PORTLAND, (& So you'd like to adopt a child? That may be a little difficult: too many other couples want a child, too. But If you'd like to adopt three children or even eight children. That's easy. You're practically Jn. The Boys and Girls Aid society here is so swamped with would be parents that it's considering a new method of trimmine the application list. Last year, 968 lamuies asKea to aaopt cnuaren. But only 109 children were avail able for adoption. "Very rarely is there an aban doned child," reported Miss Sar abelle McCleery, director of chil dren's services- for the society. "The vast majority of the chil dren referred to us are sent be cause of difficult home condi tions; they may be placed, tem porarily, in foster homes; but eventually the parents take them back again." The society, which took care of 906 children during the last year, has little trouble finding foster homes. "We sometimes have to look far and wide for a home for a parti cular child usually school-aeed boys with aggressive behavior out lor the rest, we usually have plenty of foster homes available." Nutter had operated his own advertising agency, Nutter and Associates, for tne last Jour years here. Before that he had worked on newspapers on tne faciuc coast. His childhood was spent at Ash' land. Ore., and he attended Wll- lamette university at Salem, where he married June Davles. During the war he served In the intelligence division of the Marine corps and was in Oki nawa ana japan. Besides the widow, a daughter, Barbara Lee, and a son, Jerry Scot survive. Funeral services will be held Friday. UNEMPLOYMENT CROWS Map shows areas of critical unem ployment, with 31 of the 32 U, S. cities that the Department of Labor rates "E," which means they have over 11 per cent unem ployment. And if any one is really in the adoptive mood, Miss McCleery has another possible case witiv out any applicants at all. "The child and the family may be very fine people, but they may not like each otner, sne explain ed. "We mav have five or six peo ple applying for an 8 -year -old boy. But the particular 8-year-old boy we have to place may not fit in any of those families." Atom Bomb Used! On Japan Had Scientists' O. K. LOS ANGELES, Jan. 19. UP) The atomic bomb was approved 2-1 by scientists before it was used against Japan, Dr. Arthur H. Compton disclosed here. Dr.- Compton, one of the de velopers of plutonlum, revealed that a secret poll was taken of all scientists and officials who worked on the first atomic proj ect before the bomb was used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He proposed that even wider approval that of the American public should be sought before the U. S. goes ahead with develop ment of the hydrogen bomb, de scribed as many times more de structive than the plutonlum bomb. "If the result' (of such a public poll) is 50-50, 'we should keep off it," said Dr. Compton. "If it is 2-1 for it, we should go ahead." The A-bomb has proved a de terrent to war, Dr. Compton, chancellor of Washington univer sity, St. Louis, told a news con ference. With other countries proceeding with atomic projects, he said "it becomes vitally Im portant to us to proceed with atomic development to insure our safety." The same problem is being argued in other northwest cities. The Longview city council awarded a five-year lease on meter advertising to a Seattle firm. The city is to get 20 per cent of the profits. Three adver tising signs will be allowed on each meter upright. Oregon School Stcond In Yearbook Contest UNION. Ore. UP) The year book published by , Union high school students won second place in a nation-wide contest sponsor ed by Columbia university. The "Bobcat" placed second In the lithographic division for schools of 300 or fewer students. Union was the only high school west of the Rocky mountains to win an award in the annual con test. The suit was the result of truck-train collision near Drain the morning of March 19, 1949, in which Bartholomy and his wife, June, received fatal injuries.
