Pioneer Klondike f Hospital Burns; Sister, 78, Dies DAWSON, Y. T Jan. 12(CP) Tropped In a flame-swept room Sister Mary Gideon died In the lire which Tuesday destroyed the three story 75-bed St. Mary's hos .' pital here. Two other persons were Injur ed, an unidentified Sister who was badly scorched while trying to save equipment, and a fire man. Seventy-seven patients and oth er members of the nursing staff were evacuated without injury. Cause of the fire is unknown, but it is believed to have started in the chapel. Sister Mary, 78 years old, was the oldest member of the Roman Catholic order the Sisters of St Ann at the hospital. She came here during the gold rush days of '98 when the hospital was open ed. A brisk wind and 40 below zerc weather hampered volunteer fire fighters two of whom risked their lives In an attempt to rescue the nursing Sister. Built at the height of the Klon dike gold rush, the hospital serv ed a wide area spotted with min ing camps and lonely trappers' and prospectors' cabins. LOS ANGELES, A few hours after 13-year-old Ruth Mil ler's left leg was amputated near the thigh, she was wondering how soon she'd be able to skate again. A roller skating enthusiast, she took "one more good skate" re cently in preparation for the sur gery yesterday. Hospital attaches said she is ", In fine spirits." The operation ; was performed to block spread of a malignant bone tumor. Last November when her mo ther and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs, John Marshall, told her the sur gery was necessary, the girl said "if I can't live with two Tegs, I'll die with two legs." But later she read the story of Betty Lou -Marbury, 10, of Brownsville, Tenn. Betty, after asking the nation to pray that her right hand might be saved, subsequently decided "God want ed my hand" and had It removed to prevent the spread of a malig nant bone tumor. "If God wanted that little girl's hand, then mavbe God wants my leg," Ruth said. : Now she Is happy because her doctors believe she can be fitted with an artificial limb, permit ting her a wide range of activi tieseven skating.
