T A corpulent corps of 11 Astorians, who weigh, all together, a ton and a quarter, was dieting today in a 40-day campaign to see which one can take oil the most weight. The weights of the group range from 284 pounds to a mere 195 and all 11 have put $10 each in a pot, which Is going to the man who trims the most off his waist line. . The club was organized after a session at the Elks lodge and is called officially the "2573 pound club." The group said ' it was being careful about using the term "fat men " in its nomenclature. Engineer, Brakeman Die In B. C. Train Crash CRANBROOK, B. C, Jan. 7 (CP) An engineer and brake man were killed five miles west of here early Friday when an eastbound Canadian Pacific rail way passenger train rammed head-on Into a westbound freight train. The accident occurred at the little junction of Fassiferne on the Kettle valley line, 655 miles east of Vancouver. Dead are: Peter Linton of Cran brook, engineer of the freight, and James W. Col. W.' M. Logan Home reported. He's been researching on the extraordinary epidemic all winter and has letters from 2,000 Irate witnesses who complain: The birds sweep into houses arid tear wall paper off the walls, mangle leather photograph frames, rip clothes hung out to dry, and attack milk wagons, rip ping off the bottle tops and drink ing the milk. The culprit Is clearly Identified as the blue tit, a little blue and yellow bird who is a cousin of the American chickadee. "The birds may do it lust for their own amusement, said Home. Douglas of Windsor was cleared Thursday by a coro ner's Jury of responsibility in con nection with the deaths of prematurely-born twins who Uvea a day after he believed them dead. Witnesses said Dr. Douglas sent the mother to a hospital but believed the babies were dead and left them behind. An ambu lance driver taking them to the morgue later found they were still alive.
