Mine Owners Urge Federal Force To Up Coal Output MINE OWNERS .... 18 inside WASHINGTON, Jan. 7 -Am Forty-live additional mine owner groups Thursday asked the National Labor Relations board to (ry to force miners back on a full work week by court injunction. Operator groups representing practically the entire soft coal industry now have filed unfair labor practice charges against John L. Lewis and asked for court action. The coal groups filing charges Thursday included those from Illinois, the Far West, and major "captive" mines owned by steel companies. The steel firms include Beth lehem, Republic, Jones and Laughlin, Inland, Crucible, and Armco. The operators want Robert N. Denham, general counsel of the NLRB, to seek a court order against Lewis to compel him to bargain for a new contract and to end the present Lewis-ordered three-day work week. The operators turned to Den ham after failing to get the WhHe House to order an injun tion effort under the Taft-Hartley law. President Truman indicated at a news conference Thursday that he is sticking to his hands off policy in the coal situation. He had no comment on a re ported appeal from St. Louis un. ging him to use his full authority to bring about full operation of the mines. The appeal, a reporter said, was made by a St. Louis citizens fuel committee and the St. Louis Retail Coal Dealers association. The president said he had not why be a ' dial jockey ? Lewis and other United Mine Workers union leaders individu ally, and the union treasury. The same companies filed com panion suits against the mem bers of the union asking court in junctions to bar them from abid ing by Lewis' three-day work week. Filing the suits were the Pitts burg Consolidated Coal Co., the Warner Collerles Co., the Y. and O. Coal Co., the Jefferson Coal Co. and the Cadiz Mining Co. The firms asked damages on the basis of tonnage lost by var ious miner strikers and work stoppages. They estimated the loss in 1949 at 7,000,000 tons. Abortion-Caused Death Jails Male Suspect WASHINGTON, Jan. 7.-UB A deputy coroner said today that a "completely unsuccessful" abor tion caused the death of a pretty young mother whose body was found In a blood spattered apart ment yesterday. Dr. Christopher J. Murphy, who conducted an autopsy on the bruised body of Mrs. Nina Jean Campbell, 20, said an Illegal op eration was performed a few hours before the mother of two small children died. Police filed a charge of abor tion against a man booked as Ralph Myers, 44, of Arlington, Va. Captain Robert V. Murray said that was the only charge which can be brought in such a case under District of Columbia laws. Police were led to the apart ment by the woman's husband, Carlton Campbell. 21, of Hill side, Md. Three Roseburg Cops Will Attend Training Classes Three members of the Rose burg police department, all ser geants, will attend a series of ad vanced police training classes to be held in Eugene under the spon sorship of the Oregon Association of City Police Officers and the Oregon State Sheriffs associa tion. Police Chief Calvin H. Balrd said the three designated local po licemen are Sgts. William Burke, Lloyd Larsen and Ervin Best. Chief Baird said the local men are attending the school to pre pare for a police training school to be held in Roseburg sometime in the spring, in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investiga tion. Supplementing the program carried out in the basic training schools held last summer, the new series will consist of nine special classes to be conducted by repre sentatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, state police de partment, and the Portland police department. The first four classes, to be held this month, will pro vide advanced, technical treat ment of such subjects as labora tory work in criminal investiga tion, Interviews, preliminary crime investigation and traffic enforcement. The final five classes in February will cover practical problems in the handling of burglary cases and will feature a complete "on the scene" Investl gatlon, Interrogation of "sus pects" and a moot court trial of the "accused." The 1950 series of classes will comprise the second year of a long-range program of progres sive officer training that was adopted in 1949 by the sponsoring organizations. Schools will also be held In Astoria, Oregon City, Sa lem, Corvallis, Medford, Klamath Falls, Bend, The Dalles and Pen dleton. The food ministry announced 46 officials of the Romanian Meat Distribution company have been arrested, charged with criminal negligence and with being "hos tile class enemies and racketeers." S Hiccupping Victim Facts Death By Slow Starvation LOS ANGELES, Jan. Jack O'Leary, who started his 18th month of hiccupping Thurs day, thinks maybe he's set a record.-But he isn't happy about it. O'Leary, 24, lies In a room fill ed with varieties of cure and piled high with letters from friends. The spasms come every second. It all started after an opera tion for a . ruptured appendix. Peritonitis set in, and although it was stopped, his doctor says it somehow affected his diaphragm. His weight has dropped from 120 to 80 pounds. Of chief concern is his inability to retain food for longer than five minutes. "It's a race between stopping the hiccups and slow starvation, says his mother, Mrs. Margaret O'Leary. "We've prayed and prayed. That's about all we have left." But O'Leary Is optimistic: "They'll stop," he says, "but I hope It's soon. You've no idea how tiresome it gets."
