Koellner arrang ed the decorations. ENGAGEMENT IS RECENTLY ANNOUNCED Mrs. Harold 'Sellars has an nounced the engagement of her sister, Mrs. Vye Cooper, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs..J. E. Wehr oi Portsmouth, Iowa to Dale Har vey, son of Claude Harvev of Sutherlin. Mrs. Cooner Is a graduate of St. Mary's high in Portsmouth and a graduate of Mercy Hospital school of Nursing. Council Bluffs. Ia. She has been employed as registered nurse for Dr. John Grabow, for the past three years. Mr. Harvev graduated from Sutherlin high school and Oregon State college and has been in business in Sutherlin since his return from the navy. The wedding will be an event of late February. CIRCLE NO. 3, TO MEET ON TUESDAY Circle No. 3, of the Methodist church will meet at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Harold Jones, 836 S. Pine street. T.U. held a special program meeting with the regular session Wednesday afternoon at the Friendship room In the Christian church. The prayer service, opened by Mrs. C. L. C.T.U. Mrs. Fred L. Southwlck out lined the work of the past and told of the efforts of women down-through the last two cen turies In fighting alchol. The first effort,"The Temperance Refor mation," took place in the 18th century. An article by Senator Hoar of Massachusetts telling of alcohol and Its effects on men re membered by him during his boyhood, is reported to have done much good to bring the matter to the attention of the general public. First temperance litera ture was the paper, "National Philanthropist, edited by Wil liam Lloyd Garrison. In 1837, a handful' of women in HUisnoro, Ohio, went Into the saloons to prey for the closing of such establish ments. This new movement was the beginning of the v .'J.T.U. which soon was organized In 18 states and within a decade was organized in every state in the Union as well as many lands. Today the W.C.T.U. is organized In 50 different countries. Mrs. Southwlck stressed the Youth Temperance week and education in tne cnurcn scnoois. Mrs. Kenneth W. Conn and Miss Barbara Lou Kltt reported on the national Camp Fire conference held in Portland recently at the Camp Fire council meeting Mon day at the chamber of com merce. Others attending will sub mit written reports which will te mimeographed and distributed to council members and Camp Fire and Bluebird guardians. 1 Mrs. Harold Hoyt, president, appointed a nominating commit tee for new officers. Discussion was held on sending the execu tive secretary to Arizona to a two weeks' training course and possi bility of operating a booth at the approaching Northwestern Tur key Shows, Inc., with Mrs. Chap man and Mrs. Morris Bowker in charge of arrangements.
