Octane Rating Of Gasoline PORTLAND, Aug. 16 UP) A new gadget Intended to step up the octane rating of gasoline was described Monday to the west coast section of the Society of Automobile Engineers. Although shipments of milk to the Reedsport Cheese factory have dropped oft sharply during the past few weeks, due to pas tures drying up in the long dry jpell, the volume is still large enough so that a fairly large boat is required to handle it. Old Residents Visit Mr. and Mrs. Charles Akin of Portland are returning to their home Saturday, after having spent a week at Tahkenltch lake fishing. They were accompanied by relatives from Denver and farther e.t, on their first trip to the coast. Mr. Akin, who lived In Gardi ner 40 vears ago, and was em ployed by the old Gardiner Mill companv, was proud of the result of the fishing done on this trip. Although retired from active work for the past few vears, he savs he has not forgotten how to fish, and that there are still lots of fish in Tahkenitch lake if you know "where and how to fish. She attended Oregon Slate Teach er's col Ipse at La Grande during the winter, and remained theie for the summer term, bhe will return there when school starts again In late September. Taxi Office Moves The office of the Reedsport taxi service has been moved from the corner of the Don Bal dridce earace property, on Kir avenue, to the three-cornered lot a'Tig Rainbow plaza, adlacent to the Reedsport Electric shop. With the completion of mod ern business building on Fir avenue, across the street from the Reedaoort oostoffice, by Nelson Hogan. Reedsport now has Its stats liquor store In a location by Itself, instead of with another business. The new building, constructed of pumice blocks. Is in two sections, with one used entirely for the liquor store, for which Mr. Hogan has the agency. The stock was transferred Friday from the Williams pharmacy, where It has been located for the past several years. Harold Smith of Madras, where he has a stock ranch, was a business visitor In Reedsport this week. Mr. and Mrs. Smith own ed and operated the Silver Moon here. Mr. Smith purchased and resold Tennessee walking horses .is a side line. The new boat, Initial ef fort of Bill as a boat builder, is 26 1-2 feet long, 8 12 feet wide, and draws from 1 1-2 to 2 feet of water. It is powered with a Kord Conversion motor, and has been named the Amigo. Planned pri marily for a pleasure fishing craft, Bill Is considering doing some deep-sea trolling with the Amigo if the boat proves suitable for that purpose. Leaves For Tuna Fishing Joe Abbott of Gardiner, school bus driver for Ray Rookard dur ing the winter months, left for Astoria r nday to become a mem ber of the 68-foot tuna and bait fishing boat Trask of that port. Abbott, a veteran fisherman. pillnels for shad In Smith river during May and June, the only open season lor commercial fish ing of this fish. He then fishes tuna during the summer, and re turns to his school but work for the fall and winter. Other commercial fishermen from this locality who have left since the close of'the shad fishing season are Gordon and Ralph Rriggs of East Gardiner, wno have recently left for Bay City, where they will gillnet during the fall months. An unusually good shad season was experienced by most of the local fishermen this spring. Joe Morris, whoso address Is North Bend, was a Reeds port visitor Thursday. He ap plied for a Douglas county bounty on a large coyote killed Tuesday along the Forest Serv ice road near Dean's mountain. Mr. and Mrs. Morris were sitting In their jeep, ho said, watching some elk. One very young one attracted their at tention, when they noticed a coyote watching the same ani mal, but with different ideas perhaps. Mr. Morris noting that the coyote was paying attention only to the young elk, started his Jeep and proceeded to run down the coyote before he could get out of the road, and won ders If this is a record way of killing a coyote.
