Portland Radio Stations Want Daylight Extended PORTLAND, Aug. 1. .? Four Portland radio stations want daylight saving time here extended to Sept. 23. Fast time is scheduled to end Sept. 11 in Portland. The radio stations protested to the city council that the east, where most network shows originate, will not go off daylight saving time until Sept. 25. Former Oregon RFC Official, Hill. Passes WALLA WALLA, July 30.-..P) Maurice B. Hill, 5H. former mayor of Presrott, Wash., and assistant manager of the Recon struction Finance corporation in Oregon, died Wednesday. A resident of Portland since 19.17. he had come here to visit a critically ill sister. Mrs. C. O. Whiteman of Milton, Ore. Phono 128 1 Justice Douglas Target Of Bitter Russian Blast WASHINGTON. Aug. 1IJP) Moscow is directing a stream of Its choicest epithets at Associate Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas for his vacation visit t Iran. A Moscow radio broadcast to clal monitors referred to Douglas as an "arrogant speculator" who was accompanied by a "gang of spies" on a mountain climbing Jaunt near the Soviet border. Douglas, accompanied by his son, left in June on a summer tour of Iran and other middle East areas. He announced In ad vance he planntd to climb peaks In Azerbaijan, close to the Rus sian frontier. Moscow immedi ately voiced suspicion but did not really warm up to the subject until the latest broadcast to the Iranians in the Persian language. Douglas, said Moscow, was ac companied by a "dozen devils that is. 13 Americans, who were really United States army offi cers who were disguised In moun taineering outfits." The Iranians were told: "It is as well to recall that In September and October 1947, aft er a similar ascent by another group of U.S. mountaineers in the Azerbaijan region, restric tions against the Kurds and their mass punishment was begun, and this coincided with the banish ment of 20,000 citizens of Chah lan to the far-off and uninhabited regions of tne south of Iran. "Less than a year ago another group of U.S. tourists was found in the proximity of the Soviet frontiers and along the river Aras. This group forgot all about the beautiful sceneries of the summits and began to inspect the construction of fortifications and airdromes for U.S. aircraft. Deputy Sheriff Slays Crusading Radio Director ALICE, Tex., Aug. 1-P)W. If. I Bill) Mason, 51, program di rector of Alice radio station KBKI, was shot to death here Friday. Deputy Sheriff Sam Smlthwick surrendered following the shoot ing. Mason, in a broadcast Thurs day criticizing a local dime-a-dance palace, had slated Smith wick was owner of the property. Smilhwlck, 60, was charged with murder. Mason, veteran newspaper man and crusading radio execu tive, shot near the heart, crawled 50 yards for help after being hit. He died thirty minutes later at a hospital. Later Sheriff H. P. Sain filed a charge of murder against Smlthwick. Mason began his newspaper ca reer in Oakland. Calif., and be came City Editor of the Oakland Post Enquirer. He is widely known among Cal ifornia. Chicago and New York newspaper and political figures. For a while he aided Gov. Earl Warren in his crime Investiga tions of California. Later Mason was public rela tions director in Akron for the General Tire and Rubber com pany. He left to direct the successful campaign In Mexico of President Aleman. Afterwards he establish ed a public relations bureau in Mexico. Bend, Coos Bay Men Tops In National Guard Shoot Bend and Coos Bay took the honors in a two-day regional shoot conducted by the Roseburg Rifle club Saturday and Sun day. The shoot was held at the National Guard range, li miles east of the city. First and second places for Individual competition went to Floyd Brewer and George Blay lock, respectively, both of Bend. First place team honors went to Bend, second place to Coos Bay. Gun Toter Terrifies Three Portland Taverns PORTLAND. Aug. 1. I.PV-A 25-year-old man was In jail here today, after terrifying three tav erns and some motorists with a flourished gun and wild shots. The man first turned up in the Sombrero tavern, pointing a gun at a sailor. Then he went Into the Lotus club, aimed nt the patrons, and fired a shot which hit the floor and richocheted Into the coiling. He marched out, searing a mo torist so badly that the laUTor Jumped from his car and fled, and then ran to the Harmony club. There he shot through a window. Child's Condition Is Critical After Fall EUGENE, Aug. 1 (JP) Mer rel Rogers, age five, was in an undetermined condition at Sacred Heart hospital Saturday morning after he fell from his parents' car between Goshen and Creswell. (.PV-The I largest monetary year In the his tory of the bureau of land man agement, Eugene district, was recorded during the fiscal year ended June 30, with nearly one million dollars worth of timber sold. With a total of 37 sales, the volume actually cut during the year was 97,538,000 board feet with a contract value of $966, 574. Last year's cut was bigger than the allowable 100,000,000 board feet but the difference be tween cut and sales is leveled because contracts run from one to three year periods, according to District Forester Otto C. r . Krueger. . Average hid prices on all spe cies was $12.26 and average ap praisal was $11.67. Highest price paid for Douglas fir was $17.75 per thousand feet. The above figures show In creases over 1948, with an aver age price for all species that year of $10.26 on sales totaling 86.- 150.000 board feet worth $883.73.
