Rain Givts Shanghai ! Rttpitt From Bombing SHANGHAI. July 1 UP An overcast and rain today kept Na tionalist bombers irom returning to Shanghai where Wednesday they killed 82 persona and injur ed more than 100. . Four-en gined bombers, never more than two at a time, ranged leisurely over the city at low al titude yesterday seeking targets. Most of their bombs fell in the crowded native section of Chapei. It was the most daring raid yet on the Red-captured city. Almost negligible resistance was put up by the Communists. No anti-aircraft guns went into ac tion. The bombers dropped down to around 1,500 feet to get below the overcast. They were Just out of machinegun range the only weapons used against them. The News-Review classified ads bring best results. Policeman Slain By Chase Quarry PHILADELPHIA, July 1 UP) A policeman was slain Wednes day as he chased a prowler on a wooded estate in suburban Ablng i ton Township. All available of fi ! cers were summoned to Join in ! the hunt for the slayer. I Patrolman Thomas J. Mathews, ! 32, an ex-paratrooper, was shot ! twice at close range. He fell with his pistol in its holster and hand i cuffs in his hand. Lieut. Alwyn streeper said indications at the spot were that Mathews was kill ed as he sought to handcuff a prisoner who was lying on the ground. -Patrolman Clark Cutting said he and Mathews, checking on a possible prowler in the neighbor hood, were questioning a truck driver when the man broke away and fled into a woods. Cutting radioed for help as Mathews chased the man. More than an hour-later police found Mathews' body in a clump of trees and discovered an adjoining home had been burglarized. LOSES CASTI PRINEVILLE, July 1 UP) Jess Wolard, bakery owner and volunteer fireman, isn't in good standing with his fellow-members of the Fire Department right now. He was driving up the street when the other volunteers called him to a halt and nuthad p to put out a fire in his oar. Cause of the fire? Woolard was driving with his brakes on.
