To cap the odd play, the unconscious Myrtle Creek first baseman was given an assist on a fly ball put out. Shirtliff apparently was not seriously hurt, but was removed from the game. (IP) It's commencing to look like earning a million dollars a year much less keeping that much after taxes is a thing of the past, at least If you work for a cor poration. Comparatively few people ever did make that much and no one It appeared from treasury records today, has been able to get that much pay out of a company since mid-war 1944, when film-producer Leo MeCarey was credited with $1,113,035 for 12 months efforts. A new treasury list shows America's best paid corporation employee In 1947 (or fiscal years spilling over Into 19481 got $810, 000 $175,300 less than he got to be No. l.the previous year also. Sylwester, pastor of St. Paul's and St. John's Lutheran Churches, left this morning for Portland to attend the district convention of the Northwest Dis trict of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. C. Malitz. of Sutherlin, accompanied him, as lay delegate of the two congrega tions maKine up the parish. The convention will be attended by pastors and other church leaders from Lutheran churches in the states of Oregon, Washington ana laano ana irom tne territory of Alaska. The convention will hear Dr. J. W. Behnken, presl- aent oi the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, report on the mission and educational work and expansion program of the Missouri Synod of which the Northwest District and the local congregation are members. In behalf of St. John's Lutheran Church of Sutherlin, Mr. Malitz, the parish lay-delegate, will make Jormal application lor the Suther lin congregation for voting mem bership in the general body. While attending the .convention Rev. M. Sylwester will attend to final details for the local appear ance of the Concordia Seminary Lutheran Hour Chorus. The Chorus at the present time Is on an extensive concert tour and will be in Roseburg on Thursday, June 23, for a sacred concert to be given at the Senior High School. The concert is scheduled to begin at 8:15 p.m. Mr. Malitz and Rev. Mr. Syl wester will return from Portland on Thursday and will report on the convention at next Sunday's services of St. Paul's and St. John's Lutheran Churches. (&) Fifteen Japanese war criminals Including two convicted in the Bataan death march have been hanged at Su gamo Prison recently, General MacArthur' headquarters a n nounced. The two hanged for responsi bility In the death march were Maj. Gen. Yoshitake Kawane and Col. Kurataro Hlrano. They were transportation officers whose trucks ran down and killed some of the 10,000 American and Fili pinos who died on the march from fallen Bataan in 1942. The other 13 had been tried at various times by army commis sions or military courts in Japan and the Philippines. Eleven Roseburg Students At U. O. Henry Larson has no children of his own but he has been cited as the "outstanding father of 1949." The retail trade bureau here noted that Larson, 58, has been foster-father to 28 youngsters at his farm home near here. Presently, Larscn has seven children at his home. The others have come and gone since 1941, exeept a grand-niece he and his wife reared from infanthood un til age 19. The kindly Belllngham, Wash., native disclaims any credit for his family responsibilities, how ever. "It Is all my wife's doing," he said. "She wanted to do some thing when the war came along." Sharp Turn Of Boat Hurls Girl To Death OREGON CITY, June 13. (JP) Seventeen-year-old Marie Blan ton, High School senior here, drowned In the Wilamotte River yesterday when she tumbled from a motorboat. UP) Assemblyman John F. Thompson tried hard to regulate nudists.
