12 Thi Newi-Rtviw, Rsieburtj, Ore. Men., May 16, 1949 Demonstration To Show Silage Crop Storing Equipment that Is taking the hard Jahor out of hay making will be demonstrated at the Doug las County grass silage field day Mond?.y, May 23, at the flusen bark Bros, farm at Melrose, an nounces J. Roland Parker, coun ty agent. Starting time Is 10 o'clock in the morning. Use of the grass silage method of storing forage crops Is gain ing favor rapidly throughout Western Oregon as well as In Douglas County, Parker states. Tests have shown conclusively that grass silage is second best to actual pastures from the stand point of feed value. That is, in comparison with field cured hay. At the Buscnbark Bros, farm where the equipment demonstra tion will be held, several grass handling machines will be dls nlaved and demonstrated by local farm equipment dealers and firms in Western Oregon. Much first crop hay In Doug las County is normally of poor quality due to a high percentage of grass and due to rains which postpone cutting at the best stage of maturity. Frequently, aftw cutting and while the hay Is cur ing in the field, rains fall on It and make further inroads on the hay quality. The making of grass silage, Parker points out, can be made in almost any kind of weather. Actual cutting, hauling and silo filling will be viewed at the demonstration. Savings Bonds Sales Still Lead April Redemptions Sales and redemption figures of Savings Bonds In the State of r Oregon for the month of April were released today by E. C. Sam mons, slate advisory chairman. April sales totalled $3,257,787. which was approximately even with the same month a year ago. SZ,322,wm of those sales were in E bonds an Increase of about $200,000 over the same month a year ago, Although April sales have climbed back to a parity of those of 1948, which in itself is encour aging after two months during which severe winter over the state had apparently been a fac tor In cutting into this year's sales rather severely, the most encouraging thing about the en tire situation now, Mr. Sammons stated, Is the continuing fall of redemptions which Include both cash-ins and maturities of Scries A to D bonos. For Ihe fourth straight month redemptions have been substan tially less than they were In Ihe state a year ago, with April show ing $2,318,000 less cashing in of bonds than was the case Just 12 months back. As of the end of the first four months of the year, Oregon people have cashed In al most 5 million dollars less In bonds than they did the first four months of 1948, with sales for 1949 off only a tiny percentage. The peoplri of the state, Mr. Sam mons added, have gained substan tially In their reserves. During Ihe Opportunity Drive In May and June the state advis ory chairman expressed the hope that six weeks hence, at Its close, the people of this state will not only have reached the $9,790,000 quota assigned by the Treasury Department, but will have ex ceeded It to an extent which will have real meaning In future years.
