MELROSE EXTENSION UNIT HOLDS MEETING Melrose Home Extension Unit met Friday at the grange hall lor the closing session of the year. The project leaders, Mrs. Katie Conn and Mrs. Mabel Busenbark, demonstrated "Good taste at the dining table," In a very interesting and Instructive manner, after which they served a three-course luncheon to 20 members and guests. At 2 o'clock the chairman, Patricia Doerner, conducted the business session and a vote of thanks was given Mrs. Conn and Mrs. Busenbark. Patricia Doerner was re-elected chairman for the coming year with Clara Herman being elected vice-chairman and Grace Fenn was re-elected secretary-treasur. er. A vote of thanks was given the officers of the year for work well done. LILAC CIRCLE TO HOLD PENNY SUPPER MONDAY Lilac Circle No. 49, Neighbors of Woodcraft will meet at a six thirty o'clock penny potluck sup per at the I.O.O.F. hall Mon day evening, May 16. All mem bers and their families are in vited. Following the supper the regu- jar meeting will Be held at eight o'clock. PICNIC TO BE HELD BY GOLD STAR MOTHERS Roseburg Chapter, American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., will hold a picnic luncheon at 11:30 o'clock Sunday at the Roseburg City Park. Members of the Eugene chapter will also attend. Those attending are asked to bring a basket lunch and their table service. YONCALLA SADDLE CLUB IS ENTERTAINED Mr. and Mrs. Art Rychard and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Applegate entertained the members of the Yoncaila Saddle Club at the Ap plegate home, Friday evening. Discussion of plans for the Rodeo was followed By a talk by Dr. Carter of Roseburg who spoke about the county fair to be held at the lair grounds near Kose burg some time In August. A. held its last meeting of the year Friday night at the schoolhouse with Mrs. Insley, a past president, as in stalling officer for Mrs. John Cornilsen, president; Mrs. John Clark, vice-president; Mrs. Emery wunams, secretary, ana Mrs, Lester Miller, treasurer. On account of the crowded conditions, It was voted to hold Individual room picnics instead of a general school picnic this year. Delegates to the stale conven tion in Eugene gave enthusiastic reports. Two 4 H summer school scholarships were allowed. the program for the evening included: two guitar solos by Irv ing Anderson; group singing and song "Mother," by the fifth grade girls. Refreshments were served by the retiring officers. MENDING BASKET HOLDS MEETING The Mending Basket met Frl. day afternoon at the Elgarose school with Mrs. Agnes South and Mrs. Thelma Hanson, leaders. In charge, and Charlotte Sand, president, conducting the busi ness meeting. The birthday song was sung by Loletta Buell. OAKLAND CHAPTER ENTERTAINS THURSDAY Oakland Chapter No. 91, O.E.S. entertained Drain and Elkton Chapters at a pleasant social eve ning Thursday. A number of guests were present from each visiting chapter including the worthy matron of Elkton Chap ter, Mrs. Lois Beckley. During the evening Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Blelman of Sutherlin were affiliated with Oakland Chapter by transfer of mem bership from the Silver Wave Chapter in Tillamook. An enjoyable musical program was furnished by a group of singers from the Sutherlin High School Glee Club under the di rection of Mrs. Leonard, and an accordian solo was played by Shirley Baker. Delicious refrcshmenls were served in the dining room at the close of the evening. NEW IDEA CLUB MEET8 WEDNESDAY The New Idea Club of Suther lin spent last Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Hallie Martin west of town to work on textile paintings. Following the business session, a short program on "Television in relation to our immediate vicinity," prepared by Iva Cow an, was given. A surprise bridal shower honoring Miss Pauline Pulman, who is to become the bride of Ralph Cator in July, was enjoyed. Bouquets of mixed spring flowers decorated the rooms. A simple flag-raising ceremony today winds up Ihe formalities. The General Assembly approv ed the Israel apllcation last night by a vote ot 37-12, with nine countries abstaining. The decision was followed by an Arab walk-out, but some of the Arab countries' representa tives returned for a late night meeting. Indicating that the pro test was ended. All members are urged to attend DEEP IMPRESSION DEFIANCE, O., May 13. UP) Louis Fronk drives a beer truck and he meets lots of strange characters on his stops. But Thursday he met one which left a deep impression physically. Fronk says he can prove it by the police that a baboon in a local tavern bit his leg so badly it needed medical treatment. Fronk said he was walking out with a case of empty bottles on each shoulder when the half grown baboon took a sudden dis like to him. The animal was with its owner, Carl Fogt, a customer, and there was no report it had been drink ing. Fronk, however, is doubtful.
