Hooded Gang Blackjacks Six Attending Church CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.. May 13. i.tn roiice are mvestt gating the reported blackjacking of six men and boys at a church near here by a group of robed and hooded men. The white victims, three of them teen-agers, told Sheriff Frank Burns they were beaten at a church in Dolly Pond, 25 miles from here, Saturday night. They said their attackers wore Ku Klux Klan hoods and robes. The six Identified themselves as Ed Allison, 50,' son sun, L. E. Allison, 22, and Charles Beaver, 40, all sawmill workers; Tom Ferguson, 18, his brother, Leon Idas, 14, and Henry Blair, 18. Seven violent floggings and whippings by masked and hooded men have been reported since February in the mountain area surrounding Chattanooga. Only two days ago a sheriff, three deputies and another man were indicted by a grand jury for the flogging of seven Chat tanooga Negroes at Hooker, Ga., about 20 miles south of here. The latest victims said they had Just arrived at the Little Holiness Church and services had begun when the masked men ap peared. One of the masked men ac cused Beaver of "not looking after his family properly." Legislator Frowns On Pension Bill Referral PORTLAND, May 13. WP A referendum attack on the 1949 Legislatures old age pension measure would be unwise. Rep. Rudie Wllhelm Jr., Portland Re publican, believes. He told a church fellowship meeting that the law "will make more money available for the needy by deterlng the chiselers. Joe Dunne, Portland pension group spokesman, has said refer endum petitions will be circulat ed. Principal objection to the law is its provision giving the stale a claim against the estates of beneficiaries. Flf W I;,: Boy Uses Three Companions For Rifle Targets ?FT ' MEMPHIS, Tenn., May 13. (JP) A nine-year-old boy lined three young companions against a bedroom wall Wednesday and took a shot at them with a rifle. One of the three was wounded in the ear. Sheriff's deputies said John Harold Newman fired the . shot from a combination gun a 410 gauge shotgun .22 caliber rifle. The deputies said only the rifle section of the combination gun was fired. They said the shooting occur red in the Newman home while John's parents, Mr. and Mrs, J. B. Newman, were at work. The rifle slug drilled two holes in the left ear of Jimmie Lee Patton, 8. Uninjured were Jim mie's five-year-old brother Hiner, and a playmate, Carroll Dole hile. Jimmie's injury was not considered serious. No charge had against the boy. been placed San Diego Wholesale Bakeries Strike-Bound SAN DIEGO, Calif., May 12. (PI Five of San Diego's major wholesale bread bakeries were shut down today for the fourth dav in a wage dispute with AFL bakers. Bread shelves of most inde pendent grocery stores were bare as the city depended on the out put of 40 small retail hand-bake shops, one wholesale machine bake plant, and the sole outside supply from Safeway's Stores' Los Angeles bakery. UP) Republican leaders said Thurs day they will carry on their fight to trim federal spending despite the licking they took on the first major money bill passed by the Senate. A measure appropriating $3, 113,068,503 to finance the Treas ury and Post Office Departments in the fiscal year starting July 1 was passed by the Senate Wednesday. Final approval was given by voice vote after various Republican-backed maneuvers to force a 5 percent cut in the total were defeated. As passed bv the Senate, the bill carries $40,250,600 more than the House voted. If the House re fuses to accept the increase, ef forts will be made by conferees from the two branches to work out a compromise. Senator Bridges (R.-N. H.) told reporters there will be no let-up in the reduction campaign despite the setback. He promised that "every sena tor is going to be on record a great many times on how he stands on the issue of economy before this session Is over." He called the Post Office-Treasury Bill "the most difficult to cut" of all appropriations and predicted i better luck on others to come. ! The Treasury-Post Office Meas-1 ure was the first regular appro priation bill passed by the Sen ate in this session of Congress.
