Hawaiian Strike Leads
To Embargo In U. S.
WASHINGTON, May 10. (JP
The Association of American Rail
roads Monday issued an embargo
against almost all freight destined
for export to Hawaii through
West Coast ports.
Arthur H. Gass, chairman of
AAR's car service division, said
the embargo was Issued at the re
quest of the Interstate Commerce
Commission.
It is designed to prevent a tie
up of freight cars at West Coast
ports due to the longshoremen's
strike in Hawaii. Gass said that
because freight cannot be unload
ed at its destination, rteamship
lines are not taking on further
cargo.
Military or government freight
for loading on ships operated by
the Army or Navy Is exempted
from the embargo, he said.
Coal Strike In Britain
Spreads To More Mines
MANCHESTER, England, May
10 (P) A Communist-supported
wildcat strike spread to 20 more
nationalized mines in the rich
Lancashire coal fields Monday
leaving a total of 50 pits and
36,000 men idle.
Lancashire normally produced
300,000 tons of coal a week, about
one-twelfth of Britain's total pro
duction of a fuel which is vital
to the nation's economic welfare.
The walkout began a week ago
in one pit, among 260 men who
wanted free coal for their own
use normally given to many
British miners. It spread when
two foremen entered the pit on
maintenance work. Miners called
this "blacklegging."
Only 15 mines, employing 14,
000 men, still were working in
the coal rich county today.

LONDON, May 10 (JP) The

blank checks for war. When they

Three olher speakers echoed
Wallace's criticism of the pact.
They were Sen. Michele Giua, a
member of the Italian senate; H.
Lester Hutchinson, Labor Party

wife of the Negro singer.

Probably one of th most popular shows being aired over KRNR
via Mutual-Don Lee is Jimmy Scribner's "Johnson Family." The
week of April 25, "The Johnson Family" was placed in a new broad
cast time period. "Maggie," our tape recorder, goes to work each
week-day at 1:15 recording Scribner's many voices . . . and plays
the show back at 3. We had so many phone calls regarding the
time change that perhaps now is the time to issue a bit of Informa
tion on "Radio's Greatest One-Man Show." The voice of Jimmy
Scribner is "The Johnson Family" all 22 of them. Expert mimic, he
switches his characters from Papa and Mama Johnson, from Lucy
to Pee Wee, from Lawyer Philpot to the Deacon, In the proverbial
bat-of-an-eye.
In 1936, Soribnor atarWd on W HAL Baltimore with no
lete competition than "Amos n' Andy" on a rival station at
the same time. An alert talent soout nabbed Scribner for
WLW Cinoinnatl. After three weeks, WLW asked its lis
teners what program they liked best. Scribner showed up
In 12th place. A few month! later, he was fourth from the
top, outranking in that area Lucky Strike, Major Bowes,
Amos n' Andy. A year later, "The Johnson Family" bounced
to second place. WBLM Macon recently asked listener!
If they wanted the show to remain on that station. One
thousand eight hundred letters the largest response of Its
kind over WBLM enthusiastically answered "Ye!"
At 7:15 tomorrow night, a special program of piano music
presented by the pupils of Mrs. Homer Grow will be aired. Selec
tions on the program include "Prelude In G Minor" (Rachmaninoff )
by C'.rolyn Burr, and "Two Themes and Finale" (from Scherzo-
Chopin) by Bob Church. "The Cisco Kid and the Case of Mama
Six-Guns" titles tomorrow night's "Cisco Kid" adventures at 7:30.

Eirie Partition Guarantee
Bill Arouses Irish Anger
DUBLIN, May 10. (P
Irish politicians buried political
differences Monday in a fighting
mad alliance against a British
parliamentary bill which would
practically guarantee- continued
partition of the Emerald Isle.
Premier John A. Costello, and
his predecessor and political foe.
Eamon De Valera, met with other
politicians to plan a united cam
paign against the bill. Both said
they would ask Irishmen in the
United States and elsewhere to
call protest meetings.
The bill provides that the six
counties of northern Ireland will
remain part of the United King
dom unless the Northern Irelnnd
parliament agrees to unite with
the 26 counties in the Irish
Republic.
