Cottage Grove, where Mr. Webb
has purchased the Marshall-Wells
Hardware store. They formerly
made their home here. Mrs. Webb,
formerly Maxine Stearns, Is a
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. 1!. C.

TWO YOUTHS FINED
Two 17-ycar-old Roseburg
youths were fined $-10 each, one
nn a charge of drunkenness and
the other on a disorderly conduct
count, Saturday, reported Judge
Ira B. Riddle.
The hoys were arrested Friday
night and lodged In the County
Jail, after they had been caught
tearing down a street sign, ac
cording to Chief Calvin Balrd.

Hankow Battle
Launched By Reds
SHANGHAI, May 10 (.!
A Central News Agency dispatch
from Hanhow today said the bat
tle for the "defense" of that mid
Yangtze Industrial city started
yesterday.
Meanwhile the northern fork
of a Red two-pronged drive to
ward Shanghai has been pointed
at Kuushan, a short distance
from Kunshaw. for a week.
Nationalist forces also counter
attacked west of Kunshan yes
terday, driving back a Commu
nist force. The garrison asserted

ing on, 1,000 Reds struck at Tai
chang, which Is a few miles
north of Kunshan. The communi
que said this attack was beaten
back and 200 Reds were killed.

Hankow. China's Pittsburgh on
the middle Yangtze, had ordered
noncomhntants to withdraw to

Canton-Hankow railroad.

fied attacks on the outer edge of
Tsingtao, where the lulled

Choral Society
Readying For
May 17 Concert
Preparations for the Roseburg
Choral Society's concert Tues
day night of next week are pro
gressing .very satisfactorily, it
was announced following last
night's weekly rehearsal. The
concert will be presented at 8 p.
m. in the Junior High Audi
torium. The society, directed by C. A.
Ricketts, will present it's pro
gram at the Veterans Hospital
Thursday at 7:30 p. m. A special
rehearsal will be held Sunday at
2 p. m and final dress rehearsal
is scheduled for next Monday at
7:30.
While robes, which the mem
bers, numbering about 50, will
wear for the presentation, ar
rived Monday and were issued to
the Individuals. Tickets are go
ing on sale today in eight places,
to be announced later, about
town.
The program will be mostly a
cappella and consists of classical
choral group numbers, hymns,
spirituals and a novelty number.
Dorcas Johnson and Herschel
Scott will sing solo selections.
Mrs. W. Sherman Plympton is
the accompanist for the numbers
requiring piano, and will also
play piano solos.
The concert will climax
months of preparation, since or
ganization of the community
choral group last fall. The mem
bers have enthusiastically re
sponded to rehearsals, according
to reports, and have been ably
directed by Ricketts. who is band
instructor for the Roseburg
schol system.
Bridge Across Cow Creek
Damaged By Log Truck
The steel bridge across Cow
Creek at the edge of the Glen
dalo city limits was damaged Fri
da when struck by an unidentified
logging truck. The truck, which
reportedly was crowded too close
by a car, bent one of the vertical
truss members of the bridge and
broke a heavy stringer on one
side underneath.
City police have been posted to
direct traffic onto the undamaged
half of the bridge. A county road
crew has begun repairs, and it is
expected that the job will take
about a week. In the meantime,
one-way traffic is being allowed
for automobiles and lumber car
riers, but logging trucks have
been detoured to the old Stage
Coach road.

Horn, favorites In the tennis
tournament to determine who
goes to the district meet in
singles, have come out on top
and will play tt oft today. But
both were given a scare last
night by their underdog oppon

Jacobson took the first set
from Norm Queen 6-1, but Queen
came back to take the second set
6-1. Jacobson buckled down and
took the final set 6-2.
Larry Henninger, after defeat
ing Gordon Conley for the right
to compete, gave Van Horn a
scare by taking the first set 6-3,
but Van Horn settled down and
took the next two sets 6-0, 6 2.
An exciting match is scheduled
for today between Van Horn and
Jacobson. Jacobson has been
on the top of the ladder all year,
and Van Horn has been playing
second and third man. Van Horn
has won six matches and lost one
In varsity competition, while Ja
cobson has split even, winning
two and losing two.
The district singles and doubles

in Reedsport by truck in the past
few days, for the Columbia River
Packers' Aooiatlon. They will
be used at Reedsport during the
shad season which opens May 10.
The boats wore trucked from
Wheeler, Ore., where they were

two pick-up boats, the Lois and
the Mallara, on the Umpqua.
