Lumbermen were urged yester
day to dream up new ways to
bring down the price of houses.
Arthur A. Hood, Chicago, edi
tor of the American Lumberman,
declared that the cost of housing
and the drop In sales will force
cnanges in me ngni construction
field.
"Actually only 27 per cent of
the price paid by the consumer
for a new, small home is for the
cost of materials and mechanical
equipment at the factory," Hood
told the West Coast Lumbermen's
Association.
"This proves that, besides seek
ing more efficient manufacture,
we've got to do something about
the cost of distribution and con
struction." Most whales live on fish, but
some species also eat seals and
porpoises.

Wages Believed
At Postwar Peak

The economic winds stirred up a
nint yesterday tnat wages, like
prices, may have reached a post
war peak. In some cases, they
may nave started a downward
trend.
More than 300.000 auto and
electrical workers of the General
Motors Corp., stand to take a two
or three-cent an hour pay cut on
the basis of the government's de
clining cost-of-living index.
And officials of at least one
major union, the CIO's Amalga
mated uiotning workers, said
they have decided against a
fourth round of postwar pay
boosts because of slackened de
mand for men's apparel.
"We're Dractical realists, vou
know," one clothing union official
told a reporter. "We've decided
against asking for any new wage
increase now, even tnougn our
members feel the price pinch, too,
because rlcht now our industry is
soft."
Officials of the union, holdine
a powwow here, said consumers
nave had to pay so mucn for
food In the past year they had
little left to buy clothing.
The clothing workers are the
fourth largest GIO union; only
the steelworkers, auto workers
and electrical workers unions are
larger.
Pay cuts for the auto and elec
trical workers employed by Gen
eral Motors appear Imminent be
cause their wages are tied by
agreement to the government liv
ing cost index.
The index took Its third
straight monthly decline Thurs
day to 171.4. This covered De
cember prices and was one-half
of one per cent below November
and 1.8 per cent below the Au-gust-September
peak.
