P The little girl lay quietly In the . hospital bed and stared at the red toy telephone a relative had left by her side. Five-year-old Gail Nicoletti had survived almost certain death. Last Jan. 7 her deranged lath er hurled her six-year-old brother from 150-foot high Kosciusko bridge in Brooklyn, flung Gail af ter him, and then dived over him self. Father and son died. Life remained in Gail's batter ed body. Under the most careful medical care she was nursed back to the point where doctors were sure she would recover. But she had lost her voice In the shock of the experience. As she lay there yesterday, a nurse heard her make a whim pering sound. Then she stretched out frail hands and spun a dial on the phone which rang a bell. She put the receiver to her ear. Oil Cost Drop Spells Gas Rates' Reduction PORTLAND, Jan. 28 (JP) A drop in heavy oil cost means a reduction in gas rates for Port land Gas and Coke Company con sumers in Oregon in about two weeks. C. H. Gueffroy, vice-president, said the rate per thousand cubic feet of gas will be cut 6 cents. He said consumers would be saved $500,000 a year. The com pany had recently instituted a new space heating rate increase. Gueffroy explained the firm's tariff schedule provides for an increase or decrease of 1.2 cents per thousand cubic feet for each 5 cent change in the cost of a barrel of oil. Wallgren Slated For U. S. Job, Truman Says WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 President Truman said yesterday he had something in mind for his old Senate friend former Gov. Mon Wallgren of Washington but he is not ready to announce it. Northwest Leads In Development Of Forest Areas PORTLAND, Jan. 28. (.PI The forest engineer of the West Coast Lumbermen's Association said yesterday that Oregon and Washington took Bunyan - sized strides ahead in forest develop ment last year. W. D. Hagenstein told the As sociation's annual stockholders meeting that the Pacific north west's lumbermen lead the nation in improved managtment and protection. He listed as accomplishments of forest owners in 1948: 1. The largest increase in West Coast tree farms since the pro gram began in 1941. Some 489, 448 acres were converted to tree farms; 60 more foresters em ployed, bringing the total in pri vate employment to 600. 2. The year brought the best fire season in history, with only 6,562 acres burned in the 'Douglas fir region. 3. Short-wave radio for fire protection was adopted by 20 companies. 4. Reforestation by helicopter expanded, with 3,000 acres re seeded that way. 5. Utilization of wood improv ed, with 100 operations salvaging leftover wood from previous log ging. Today, he said, 25 per cent more wood per acre is utilized than a decade ago. Lt. Gen. Eaker Warns On Russia's War Potential LOS ANGELES, Jan. 2S. .T) Lt. Gen. Ira C. Eaker says Rus sia has a huge war potential and a fifth column in this country that is "the biggest and most power ful of any place in the world." The wartime chief of air staff, now retired and living in Beverly Hills, told the Kiwanis Club that "more Moscow money is being lavished to undermine the Ameri can government than was used In China." With America's eight-hour, five day week and 140,000,000 popula tion, it would be difficult to build as much war potential as Russia could with 180.000,000 population, working 15 hours six days a week, he said. "This country," he continued, "should have a sound plan of campaign ready. We would need an overwhelming air power, sup plemented by adequate ground and naval forces, and we also would require better trained lead ership than we had in the last I war." Dy oral- U. S.
