NEWS-REVIEW, ROSEBURS. OREGON, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 21. 1948 THREE School Teachers For Census Task In 1950 Proposed Bv JANE EADS WASHINGTON. The Bureau of the Census has come forth with the proposal that facts for the 1950 census be collected as far as possible by school teachers willing to work as regularly paid enumerators. According to of ficials of the bureau the plan "frankly seeks to capitalize upon the assets of the teaching pro fession." In a pamphlet issued to the profession it suggests that the teachers "by profession and se lection are well prepared to en ter quickly Into the important tasks of census enumeration. If about 600,000 teachers and other qualified school employes volun teer, the work will require about one week of full-time service, plus some additional time for training, follow-up and verifica tion," the bureau estimates. "The teachers of America built an enviable record for effective work rinrinff th WnrlH War Kn other group of public employes is more widely recognized by the ublic for their idealism and their iterest in the general welfare." i jui me iaineris uitfniiMrivi-"ft, It is pointed out that they would gain an opportunity to serve in an important national undertak ing and their direct contact with the community in an important service capacity would add to their prestige. Other advantages would include: '.'Experience in dealing with people of gaining a compre hensive acquaintance with the area in which their school serves. .Realization of the nature of many phases of American life and of the sources of statistical informn. tion which may be used later in the classroom. Satisfaction in knowing that they have contrib uted to the development of more exact information on our popula tion, industries, occupations, ag riculture and housing." The 123,000 enumerators who collected the 1940 census facts were selected from all groups available for employment at the time. But the Bureau of the Census believes that procedures used in the past have resulted in errors and incompleteness in the information compiled. School officials and boards of education are asked to conskbr making it possible for teachers and other qualified school per sonnel to serve as enumerators by adjusting the school calender 1949-50 to allow a week of free time during the period of April 1 to 15, 1950. Soldier Romeo Flooc tnrlrarla BERLIN, Dec. 21. (For mer Paratrooper Edward J. Lada, who cracked the Russian block ade for his love (or loves), has disappeared from the U. S. Army jail where he was held. His absence from the stockade was discovered Saturday night. MP's went immediately to the homes of his two German girl friends, one of them the mother of his two-year-old daughter. Lada was not with either of them. Lada had been held at the Army stockade on charges of Ille gal entry into Berlin. The 28-year-old Newark, N. J., veteran hitch hiked through the Soviet zone in November. He was arrested after he went to the U. S. consulate to try to legalize his visit. Lada told authorities he had come to see his sweetheart. He didn't say at first there were two of them. He said he came for Ursula Schmidt, blonde 21-year-old act ress. Then he said he wanted to marry Ruth Riecki, 23-year-old mother of his daughter. He asked for a visa for Ruth and the baby. She already had been turned down once because of ill health. Ursula told military police she wrote to Lada and "told him off." Three U. P. Delivery Is Urge Last call was sounded today by Postmaster L. L. Wimberly for patrons wishing to have Christ mas cards and gift parcels de livered to cities any distance by Christmas day. Emphasizing that only five days remain until Christmas, the local postmaster warned late mailers that air mail and air par cel post facilities should be used exclusively. Otherwise, due to the unprecedented volume of mail now in transit, gifts travel ing by slower methods face the probability of not reaching their destination in ample time. He pointed out that mail going' by air will reach any city in the United States overnight, and in some instances will reach over seas points in 24 hours, particu larly to United States possessions and territories as well as Canada, Mexico and Cuba. "With a modern postal system second to none, our 42,000 post offices stand prepared to expedite incoming and outgoing holiday traffic through the last minute. However, tardy patrons must take the responsibility from here on out unless they use our fast est transportation which is air mail and air parcel post," said Wimberly. The postmaster said that Fri day, the peak of 38,000 machine cancellations of letter mail had been reached. This figure is bet ter than 3,000 over last year's peak, he said. A sorting station for Christmas mail has been set up in the Crea son Hotel building, in order to keep the congestion out of the main post office. There has been a heavier mail load here this year than In any previous year. Wimberly added that postal re ceipts this month have been about 10 per cent higher than at the same time last year.
