PAGE SIX SECTION 2 NEWS-REVIEW, ROSEBURG, OREGON THURSDAY. DECEMBER 16. 1948 7 f V y Dr. Morgan Odell Dated for Talk To Presbyterian Men Dr. Morgan S. Odell, president of Lewis and Clark College, has been engaged to speak this eve ning before the local Presbyterian men's organization, according to N. D. Johnson, vice president and program chairman for the group. All Presbyterian men and their guests are invited to attend the affair, starting at 6:30 p. m. in the basement of the Church. In announcing Dr. Odell's ap pearance, Johnson said the edu cator's record at the Portland col Ifge has been very outstanding. He has been president of the institution since 1942, during which time the enrollment has increased from 200 to its pre sent 1200. Despite the trend away from heavy enrollment of veterans not ed in other Oregon colleges, Lewis and Clark College this year has shown an increase in number of students under the G. I. Bill. It was under Dr. Odell's leader ship that the institution purchased the Lloyd Frank estate in Port land, which now compromises the campus. Eugene Springer, president of the local group, said musical numbers have been arranged by Charles Ricketts, high school band director. Croup singing will com plete the program. SMILEY Ncwi-Revlew Correspondent Despite a wide-spread report to the contrary, Reedsport has not been flooded during the present storm, and there seems little prospect that it will be. A salesman who calls here reg ularly was warned before arriv ing Monday that he should make his calls "as quickly as possible and get out or town ' as tne en tire town would be "flooded by noon and highway ti attic cut off." There was a big rise in both the Smith and Umpqua Rivers, but was referred to by residents along the two streams as at the "nuisance" rather than the dan gerous stage. Some logs were loose in the river, and a considerable pile of floating debris became lodged on the support span of the Southern Pacific railroad bridge at Re-ds- port, but this was pulled loose by a towboat Monday. On upper Smith River, some fern pickers. were reported as marooned when a slide blocked the road above the Olson brothers' ranch, mak ing it impossible for them to get their car out until' such time as the slide is removed. Farms In the valley above Loon Lake were without transporta tion for a few days when the roads leading to the ranches hi some sections of the valley were covered too deep for the milk and freight trucks to operate. The only report of exceptional ly high water in this section was from Dean's Creek, where some of the older residents said the water reached a higher stage than they had ever seen it. Of the log rafts that broke loose, one belonging to the Gard iner Lumber Co. is reported to j have cotten entirely nwav ami I crossed the bar.
