j NEWS-REVIEW, ROSEBURG. OREGON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1948 THREE U.0.Webfoots Blast Bruins I In 26-7 Win Rose Bowl Hopes High I With Only Oregon State j Remaining on Schedule ' LOS ANGELES, Nov. IS-UK The University of Oregon's loot , ball team headed home todav, ; having shown in powerful man ner that its Rose Bowl dreams , are anything but bubbles in the air. i Keeping abreast of unbeaten California in the drive to repre ; sent the Pacific Coast Conference i at Pasadena's New Year's Day classic, the big, smooth running i Oregon eleven kept its confer j ence record intact by crushing a fighting but outmatched UCLA : Bruin last night, 26 to 7 before ! 42,000 fans. ! The win was the Webfoot's sixth in conference play. It broke i a 15-year jinx for the Webfoots ! playing the Bruins in Memorial i Coliseum, and left them witn : one more obstacle in their drive for the first appearance of an Oregon team in the Rose Bowl since the Webfoots dropped a 7-6 decision to Harvard in 1920. The team is keeping one eye ahead on their next foe, a major foe any year Oregon State. The other eye is fastened on the California Bears and their game today with Washington State and next week against traditionally bitter Stanford. California defeated UCLA last week, 28-13, and lost some of Its luster in the doing. UCLA Coach Bert La Brucherie declin ed to compare the Bears and Oregon. But he had nothing but high praise for the Webfoot's field general and pass artist, Norman Van Brocklin. The same is true of Oregon'3 backs Bob Sanders, Woodley Lewis, George Bell and a line anchored by bruising Brad Eck lund, 200-pound center. Jim Aiken's strong men spent the evening opening tremendous holes for the ball carriers. They throttled the UCLA attack until, with reserves dottine the field. the UCLANS traveled 93 yards in the final quarter for their lone touchdown. Oregon cashed in on one breaK a fumble on the Bruin 23. They failed to cash In on another fumble, but that was the only mistake they made. Van Jlrock lin, using his arm sparingly in favor of directing a murderous ground attack, set up the second touchdown with his aerial wiz ardry. The next two Webfoot scores came on marches of 60 and 51 yards, with Sanders, Lew is and Company tearing off huge gains afoot. Oregon rolled up 380 yards total offense, UCLA 23. Van Brocklin threw only 12 passes, completed six for 89 yards, and his right end, Dick "Vilkins, shar ing the spotlight with his wing mate, Dan Garza, caught his 25th pass of the season to break a conference record of 24 set last j year by Oregon State's, Don Mast. ! Levy on Out-of-Town ; Firms up to City Voters ST. HELENS. Ore., Nov. 13. I UP) Voters will ballot next i month on a charier amendment i which will enable St. Helens to 'levy license Tees on out-of-town ! firms doing business In the city. 1 Such fees were ruled illegal by Circuit Court Judge Howard K. Zimmerman, who held that the present city charter did not not permit the levies. The charter is now beinr: reworded, t The judge upheld the city on one important point He ruled that charging license fees 50 per cent higher for out-of-town firms was not discrimi atory, since local fims pa additional money through real prope-ty taxation. Dame, Army Ruled Favorites In Today's Games NEW YORK, Nov. 13. (JP) Notre Dame and Army ruled solid 14-point favorites today in the headline games of a crowded college football program. The Irish met ambitious North western at South Bend with a chance to tie the 26-game unbeat en string of Knute Rockne's 1929-30-31 juggernauts. The West Point Cadets, head ing toward a new all-time col legiate record for' ball-carrying power, engaged big, bruising Pennsylvania at Philadelphia. In addition to Notre Dame nnd Army, another of the five remain ing unbeaten, untied major teams Clemson faced its toughest ob stacle of the year. Rugged Wake Forrest, already chosen for Birm ingham's Dixie Bowl, was Clem son's foe at Winston Salem and perhaps the day's largest menace to the thinning perfect ranks. The other unsmudged elevens Michigan and California were blessed with a comparatively mild afternoon's work. The Wolverines played Indi ana, already beaten five times. at Ann Arbor. The Golden Bears, making the boldest bid for the Pacific Coast spot in the Rose Bowl, tangled with twice-whipped, once-tied Washington State at Berkeley. North Carolina, its clean rec ord soiled by the tie with Wil liam and Mary last week, took on Maryland at Washington, D. C, in a game that should send one of the Southern Conference teams into a bowl. Jefferson of Portland Enters Football Playoff (By Th Associated Press! Jefferson of Portland vaulted into the state high school play offs today and that left only one question mark In the Dicture. Hillsboro provided the poser bv trouncing McMinnville last night, 14-0, to leave the District 6 race in an apparent tie between the two teams. Hlllsboro's win meant a tie with McMinnville for the Tualatin-Yamhill Valley League title, but Hillsboro was believed to have the edge for the district nomination by reason of its con vincing win over McMinnville. ine losers never threatened seri ously. i Jefferson gained the playoffs by trimming city rival Roosevelt, 13-2, for the District 8 title. Last week the same two teams Dlaved to a scoreless deadlock for the Portland city championship. That completed with the ex ception of District 6 the pair ings for the stale playoffs to start next week. The District 6 football committee will determine how to select the winner there. The pairings: La Grande (District 1) at Med ford (2). Grants Pass (3) at Albany (4). Gresham 5) at District 6 win ner.
