PIERRON Field Assistant, Eugene, Ore., Kield Office, Social Security Administration The Social Security Administra tion, through its Bureau of Old Age and Survivors Insurance, ad ministers a government insurance program which provides a month ly income for insured workers and their families, when the worker retires at the age of 65 or later, and for his family when he dies. This program is operated en tirely by the federal government and should not be confused with the Old-Age Assistance and the unemployment insurance pro grams which are operated by the various states in conjunction with tne lederal government, certain similarities between these pro grams have sometimes led to mis understandings and the purpose of this explanation is to attempt to clarity tne meaning or urn-Age and Survivors Insurance. first of all, this Drogram Is so cial insurance. Its cost is shared by the worker and the employer. The workers contribution (or tax) Is 1 per tent of the wages he gets on job! covered by Social Secur- ir- up to j,uuu a year, rnis con tribution is deducted from the em ploye's wages by his employer and the employer pays a like amount. These wages are report ed quarterly by tne employers, listing each employe by name, the wages paid to this employe during the quarter and his or her Social Security number. These wages are posted tc the credit of eacn worKer on a macnine record system at the division of account ing operations of the Social Se curity Administration in Balti more, Md. Kin Also Share A certain amount of work on jobs covered by the Social Secur ity Act is required before any re tirement or aeatn Denent can be paid. The monthly payments made fall into two groups: (1) to insured workers age 63 or over who are temnoraril" or perma nently retired; also to their wives, age 65 or over, and to their chil dren under 18: and ( ') to tne sur vivors of workers who have died. The workers age does not matter, only the amount of employment covered by social becurity prior to his death. The beneficiaries may be children under 18; widows (of any age) who have a child un der 18 in their care; widows age 65 or over; or dependent parents, age 65 or over. When no survivor Is immediately eligible for month ly benefits, at the death of the wage earner, a' lump sum pay ment may be made to tne widow or widower, or to tne nerson wno paid the luneral expenses. Must Be ADDlied For Old-Age and Survivors Insur ance payments are made as a mat ter of right and are not. based upon need. However, benefits are not paid automatically. An appli cation must be filed. For this rea son the Social Security Adminis tration has nearly 500 field offices throughout the United States serving the public for this pur pose. The field office located In the Post Office Building, Eugene, serves Douglas, Lane, Coos Curry and Josephine Counties.
