An official reprimand closed the case of the State Department of ficer who told Congress that sub versive agents were getting into this country through the United Nations. Press aide Michael McDermott said last night that Robert C. Alexander will remain as assist ant chief of the visa division. The Department had charged him with misconduct and dereliction of duty after his testimony before a senate judiciary group was dis puted by Secretary of State Mar shall. Alexander, who has been with the State Department 30 years, stood fast, refusing to attend a closed meeting for a hearing of the Department's charges against him. lie demanded an onen session. In a written answer to the charges, he said officials should be able to testify before congres sional committees without fear of "retaliation." McDermott said the reprimand, which came from assistant secre tary John E. Puerifoy, closed the case. Alaska Faces Tighter Fishing Restrictions SEATTLE, Oct. 21 (Tight ened fishing restrictions are in prospect for Southeastern Alas ka next year because there are no longer enough fish .to go around. George Kelez, fisheries super visor for Alaska, told a U. S. Fish and Wildlife hearing more stringent regulations must be written for next year and he cit ed a series of poor runs to sup port his point. Southeastern Alaska packers testified "flagrant and untold damage" has been done to spawn ing fish by abuse of a "personal use" law which permits Alaska residents to take fish for their own use the year around. i Horse Fails to Survive Tumble Into Coos Cove COOS BAY, Oct. 22 (.P) "Red," the stallion which tum bled over a 50-foot cliff Into a sea-locked cove, won't ever get qut. The horse died on the beach, a few days after his owners, Mr. and Mrs. William rotter, were working out a gadget to extricate him. The owners had climbed dov i to the beach with ropes to res cue the horse. They lifted him to his feet with an improvised derrick; fed and exercise.d him. Ultrafax, New Method of High Speed Communications, Presents Amazing Possibilities in Various Fields WASHINGTON, Oct. 22. In Just two minutes and 21 seconds, the complete text of "Gone With the Wind" 1.047 printed pages was sent by radio-Television across three miles of Washing ton yesterday. It was a demonstration of ultrafax, a new high speed com munications method. A picture of the page Is flashed by the trans mitter and at the receiving end is copied on microfilm. Officials of the Radio Corpora tlon of America, one of the devel opers of ultrafax, said develop ment of the microfilm would re quire about five minutes, and the developed film could then be viewed immediately. David Sarnoff, president of the Radio Corporation of America, termed ultrafax "as significant a milestone in the field of commu nications as was the splitting of the atom In the world of energy." The demonstration was ar ranged at the Library of Con gress where ;i receiver was instal led three miles distant from the transmission point. Ultrafax, developed by RCA's laboratories in cooperation with Eastman Kodak Co. and the Na tional Broadcasting Co., is de scribed as working this way: Material to be transmitted Is "scanned" by a special television cjirwica which ttatismjts.lt at the rate of !i0 pictures a second. On the receiving end, an ap paratus translates the televised signals into impulses of light that are recorded on motion picture film or photographic paper. Relay by Radio Towers - ' A war-developed system of high speed film processing is used to deliver a single frame ready for printing or projecting in 4a sec onds. RCA said the transmissions could be releyed any distance across the country by using com mercial radio relay towers being erected for a nationwide televi sion network. "Our armed services, said Sar noff, "certainly can appreciate the value of this new system of high speed communications. "In the busiest days of the war, the signal center at the Pentagon Building handled as many as ten million words in 24 hours.
