NEWS-REVIEW, ROSEBURG. OREGON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1948 TWO Electronic Eye Devised for Many Industrial Tasks LOS ANGEI.ES, Oct. 14. LW An electronic eye system, ci vilian version of a model used to pilot wartime guided missiles, was previewed here yesleitiay and Its makers predict It will per iorm countless tasks in Industry. Called Vericon, the system con sists basically of three portable units, a camera, a power genera tor and Ti by 5 5 8 Inch screen. Each of the units fits Into a suitcase-sized box. It differs from conventional television in that images are sent from camera to screen over wires, Instead of broadcast. The units plug into a wall socket and are ready for operation. The svstem was developed by -the Remington Rand laboratory of advanced research at Nor walk, Conn. Now ready to be mar keted, at J7.500 without extras, the eye was developed during the war. Until recently the Army had a monopoly on lis use. It served as a seeing eve for guided missiles In experiments. It also has been used to avoid risking human lives In removing fuses from live bombs. The camera is focused on a ro bot machine which remoVes the sensitive fuse. Six thousand feet away the operation is observed on the screen. If the bomb ex- filodes a camera Is the casualty nstead of a human life. An Inkling of some of Verl eon's commercial uses was given by William A. Norvell of Reming ton Rand who will demonstrate It to business men on a nation wide tour. "Any business that requires! rapid transmission of records, I messages or anv documents can use it' he said. "A bank teller could hold a check before a cam era while a file clerk in another room verified It from a screen." As many as 10 screens mav be hooked up to one camera. Thus several offices In a building could be wired Into a circuit. Norvell says the television and motion picture Industrie! have showed particular- imprest. Veri con could be used for auditions, rehearsals or even screen testa, he believes. Police departments expect to use it to view suspects In off guard moments. Mrs. Dorothea Miller and her two children of Sturgls, Mich., will arrive by plane Saturday to make their home with Mrs. Mil ler's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Phil ip Pratt of Rice Valley. Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Eden and children visited Sunday with Mrs. Jean Robertson of Salem and Mrs. Klda Lowman at the Lowman home In Elmira. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Shepherd and son, LeRoy drove to Grants Pass on business Tuesday, while there, they took dinner with Jim's aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Garrison. The small son of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Churchill has been quite ill. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Russell of Winchester Bay were visiting old friends In Rice Valley last Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Cogswell of Long Beach, California and Mr. ana Mrs. Johnny Roache of Coos Bay have been visiting at the Fred Cogswell home. Soviet Aggression Is Denounced By Canadian Labor TORONTO, Oct. 14UPi The Canadian Congress of Labor I CIO) Is on record with a denun ciation of Russian aggression. Delegates voted by a margin of about 7 to 1 to write a stiffly worded foreign policy resolution Into the program being drafted at the annual convention of the congress. The resolution condemned "the totalitarian activities in Soviet Russia and her satellite nations" and the blockade of Berlin. (A hardening of policy toward Communism was reported shap ing up In the convention of an other major labor organization, the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada (AFL), In Victoria B,. C, Convention. Sources there said the executive committee was pre paring a resolution, expected to be adopted, actively condemning Communists In the Canadian Lab or movement. I A minority headed by M repre sentatives of the United Electrical Workers objected to the denun ciation of Russia. The electrical workers termed the Marshall plan "imperliallstic aggression." Donated Timber Tract Will be Sold by O. S. C. CORVALLIS. Ore., Oct. 14 UP) Oregon State College will sell a 640-acre tract of old growth timber on Imnaha Creek, 13 miles southeast of Prospect. The timber, a gift to the School of Forestry, will be offered on sealed bids. Proceeds will be used to enlarge McDonald forest near the College as part of the pro gram of concentrating forest holdings for maximum use in teaching and research. More Y. M. C. A. Oregon's Tourist Business in 1948 Under 1947 Figure Some farmers cover vegetable plants with paper bags to protect them against damage from frost. SALEM. Ore.. Oct. 14 Oregon's 1948 tourist business was worth $92,000.(100, or 12 per cent below the 1947 record llg ure. The State Highway Commis sion announced the figures after a survey which Included asking questions of many tourists. The 1918 figure, second larg-i est on record, is almost double the pre-war estimates. . The average tourist this year spent $5.35 a day, compared with $5.91 In 1947, and $6.21 in 1946. Each out-of-state car represent ed $116.65 in spending. Based on an average load of 3.07 passen gers and a week's stay In Ore gon. About 600.000 cars from other states visited Oregon this year. There were cars from every state, but 51 per cent of them were from California. Washington was second, Illinois third, and Nebras ka, Idaho and Kansas followed in that order. The Tourist Bureau said the drop in tourist business was caus by the high cost of living and tightening of purse strings, assert ing Oregon's downward -trend was similar to the national drop in tourist business. The Columbia River flood last June caused a 29 per cent drop in tourist business for the month. Th Hureau said it would be- in its 1949 advertising campaign November In national maga zines and newspapers. China Pays Irs Second Lend-Lease Installment WASHINGTON, Oct. 14.-.T) China has paid lis $2,324,930 second annual Installment on its settlement of postwar lend-lease purchases from the United Stale, the State Department announced yesterday. The agreement, made In June. 1946. covered purchases of about $51,000,000 of lend-lease material on order when the war ended. Payments are to be made over a 30-year period. Zoning Law Permits Regulation of Mining SALEM, Ore., Oct. 14. (. The 1947 county zoning law Is broad enough to permit county zoning commissions to regulate placer mining and gold dredging within the zoning districts.
