FOURTEEN NEWS-REVIEW. ROSEBURG. OREGON WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 13. 1948 Missing Bulgar Diplomat Turns Up In United States BALTIMORE. Oct. 12 UP) A young Bulgarian diplomat who disappeared mysteriously itii month from Istanbul, one of the world's spy haunts, has turned up in the United states. Immigration authorities said today 35-year-old Dimitri Karag heuzov arrived here last Friday aboard a Turkish steamer and waa paroled yesterday to an Army Intelligence officer. He had been acting Bulgarian consul In Istanbul, a dashing dandy of the Balkan diplomatic net and survivor of several purges in his country's foreign service after Bulgaria came Into the Rus sian orbit. His father disappeared during the Red Army occupation of Bul garia but the son clung to his post in Istanbul, center of a heavy two-way traffic in military and diplomatic secrets. Karagheuzov failed to appear at a social function Sept. 9. He was called back to Sofia by his government four days later but did not answer. Turkish papers reported he had been spirited out of the country after hiding four days from agent of Soviet satellite coun tries. They said he was believed to be carrying secret codes and diplomatic papers. An Immigration service spokes man told the Baltimore Evening Sun today: "We'd rather talk about atom bomb secrets than this guy." They reported he was paroled : to Col L. L. Williams of the Army Intelligence bervlce in Washington and would say no more "for reasons of Internation al security." America's 'Most Virile' Men Named by Artists CHICAGO, Oct. 13 tP Candi date Earl Warren, Actors Clark Gable and Victor Mature, Singer i Jack Smith and Baseball Man-1 ager Lou Boudreau yesterday were named the five "most virile men in America." The selections were made by , the International Artists Com mlttee, a group of 40 illustrator. The reason for the survey of American men was given by Reno Blondi, committee director, thus: "Ever since the advent of the new look, artists have needed more virile men as models. An i extreme feminine woman needs a very manly opposite to bring out the best points of both. "These five are about as virile as you can get. They're positively loaded with hormones, or appear to be." asked Loo, a merchant, what they'd name her. Loo replied: "Well, It's like this, your brother Is governor Thurmond and he Is Dixie's candidate, so we'll name her Dixie Thurmond Loo." So they did. Chinese Name Child For S. Carolina Governor AUGUSTA, Ga Oct. 13. UP) The eighteenth child of a Chinese couple here has been named for Gov. J. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina and the Southland. The baby was born to Mr. and Mrs. S. Y. Loo with Dr. J. Wil liam Thurmond, brother of the States' Rights presidential candi date, maktng the delivery.
