By DeWTCT MacKENZIE ' AP Foreign Affairs Analyst , A most remarkable spirit of Russian "peace and goodwill" descended for a time on the deliberations of the United Nations - meeting In Paris yesterday when Vishinsky abandoned his customary oratorical invective and declared Communists "are yearning for cooperation." That was an amazing back-top which naturally gave rise to spec ulation as to its significance. What could have caused such an abrupt change? Of course the non-Communist countries on the social committee had appeased Russia the previous dav bv the withdrawal of an amendment to the declaration on human rights saying mat an numan beings are "cheated in the image ana like ness of God." Russia's Alexel Pavlov had ob jected to such language. He said in the Soviet Union the postu late that man is created in God's image is "much disputed" and often regarded as "a certain sign of social backwardness." he spoke with kindly tolerance of west ern Ignorance, and the refer, ence to God was eliminated. However, It could hardly have been this striking appeasement which influenced vitriolic Vish .insky. A British spokesman turn j med the thing up for reporters I rather more prosaically when he said the offensive by the West ern Powers in the Security Coun cil had "kept Vishinsky fairly subdued." The spokesman was re ferring to the charge laid be fore the Council by the Western Powers that the Soviet blockade of Berlin is a threat to peace. He explained that the deputy for eign minister had been put on the defensive, and said the West ern Powers feel sure the course they are following will In the end make Russia change her pol icies in Germany. Attituds Softentd Vishinsky's speech came after a broadside from U. S. delegate Warren R. Austin in the U. N. Assembly political committee. Austin asserted that the Soviet battle cry in the world today is "wreck and destroy." He charg ed Moscow with duplicity. Vishinsky, Instead of trying to tear his oppoent limb from limb, as is his usual procedure, adopted an attitude of injured dignity. He complained that the Western Nations believe "whatever we do is wrong." He said to accuse the Soviet delegation of provocation would "be ludicrous if was not so sad." The speaker capped that by declaring that capitalist and Com munist ideologies could live side by side in the same world "if both sides try to understand the other side. Hence our desire to cooperate." He didn't explain how this fitted in with the cardinal Communist tenet that capitalism must be wiped out. All of which strikes me as meaning merely that Russia is under pressure and consequent ly is staging a tactical diversion. There Is no real sign that she has chanced her views in the 'slightest degree. She is merely responding to two-fisted methods, which are the only thing she understands. Yoncalla Mr. and Mrs. Amos Coggswell of Long Beach. Calif., are visiting at the Fred Coggswell home in Rice Valley for a month. Mr. and Mrs. John Bowman and Mrs. Bowman's brother, D. C. Jennings, returned home Fri day after spending the past six weeks on a trip through Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, Min nesota, Illinois, Missouri, and re turning home through Texas and California. Mr. and Mrs. William Coins of Wever, Iowa, spent several days at the Homer Kruse home last week. Mrs. Goins and Mrs. Kruse were schoolmates In Iowa. Elmer Ellison and Homer Kruse spent several days on a hunting trip near Bend. Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Smith and son. Gordon. Mrs. Elmer El lison and Mrs. Homer Kruse mo tored over to Tiller Sunday to visit Mrs. Ellison's daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Fer guson. The baby will be named Rosea n. Mrs. Jen Vest of Portland spent the weekend here with her hus band and son. Mrs. Russell Wilson spent a week recently visiting relatives in Los Angeles. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Westcott of Los Angeles arrived here last week to visit their daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Kellogg. Mr. and Mrs. Westcott will lo cate In Roseburg for the win ter. Mrs. Freeman left Monday for a month's visit with relative in California. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Gilmer spent several days last week with their son and wife in Spring field. Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Richards are visiting at the Ralph Westen heiser home near Reedsport for a couple of weeks. Mrs. W a m p 1 e r moved her household goods to Roseburg Fri day. Mrs. Wampler is trying to sell her home in the south part of town. Delton Allen and Junior Hud son made a business trip to Port land last week. Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Brooks, Sr., Leonard and Robert Brooks spent several days last week deer hunt ing in Eastern Oregon. Mrs. H. V. Thlel left Tuesday for a two weeks trip to Waits burg, Spokane and White Salm on, Wash. On her return she will visit in Portland for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Shores and daughter, Beverley and son Bill of Portland are visiting at the Russell Loyd home over the week end. Dayn Martin left last week to join the pars-troopers of the U. S. Army. Dayn will go to Ja pan. Rudy Ulbright and his nephew, Walter Ulbricht, are enjoying a few days visit with relatives in South Dakota. This is the first time in 20 years since Rudy has been back to his old home town. Crain, 52. managing editor of the Salem Capital Jour nal, died yesterday. . One of Oregon's best-known political writers, Crain had been In poor health for the past 10 years. He had been bedfast for the past three years, and much of his work was done at home in recent years. He suffered an attack of Infan tile paralysis when he was about 18 years old, and was badly crip pled ever since. Crain Joined the Capital Jour nal staff as a reporter 30 years ago after being graduated from the University of Oregon. He leaves a widow and daugh ter.
