NEWS-REVIEW. ROSEBURG. OREGON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1948 NINE fcr. Brougher To Speak Sunday At Baptist Church Sundav will be another big day at the First Baptist Church, in Roseburg, with Dr. J. Brougher preaching at both the morning and evening services. Dr. Brougher is nationally known and has been pastor ot some of the largest churches in America. His subjects lor the dav are "Washing .Dirty Dishes Cheer fully," at 11 o'clock, and "Climb ing the Golden Stairs," featuring a hundred dollar illustration at 7:30 o'clock. There will be special music at all services under the direction of Wendell Johnson, director of music. On Monday night at 7:30, Dr. Brougher brings his last humor ous popular lecture. At the re quest of his friends in Roseburg. he will speak on the topic "Will Rogers and the Philosophy of Good Humor." For many years Dr. Brougher and Will Rogers were close friends and on several occasions engaged in friendly de bates. After the death of Will Rogers, Dr. Brougher was called upon to minister at the funeral. Preceding the lecture Monday evening there will be a men and boys banquet, at which Dr. Brougher will speak.. Other regular services at the church are the Bibje School at 9:45 Sunday morning, youth meetings at 6:15 Sunday evening and the midweek service on Wednesday at 7:30. Smuggling Won Honor For Thomas Jefferson FLORENCE, S. C. (.P) A smuggling job on rice gained Thomas Jefferson an honorary membership in the Agricultural Society of South Carolina. At torney W. Marshall Bridges, a student of Jefferson's life, re ports that the 1787 ambassador to Great Britain found rice there superior to that grown in South Carolina. He looked into the matter, and found that the superiority deriv ed from the rice, grown in Pied mont, Italy, being of a different strain than that grown in the United States. In one of his note books Jefferson wrote that an Italian muleteer "will smuggle a sack of rough rice for me to Genoa: it being death to export it in that form." The smuggler was successful, and the new rice thrived in this country. In recog nition, Marshall says, Jefferson was accorded the membership. MOOSE PANICS BUTTE BUTTE, Mont. This question has been debat ed among experts on interna tional law, but has now be come more prominent than ever with the Belgium Professors Pic card and Max Cossyns planning to descend 12,000 feet down through the ocean. A world known Danish expert on International law, Dr. Juris Georg Cohn of the Danish for eign office, says the problem now needs a solution since the United States, Argentine, Mexico, Chile and this year also Iceland have proclaimed themselves owners of the bottom of the sea from their beaches to where the mainland under the water suddenly slopes down from about 600 feet under sea level to 3,000 feet or more. It is now considered only a matter of time when minerals and coal may be found there. Russia for a long time has been pumping oil from the bottom of the Capstan Sea. In 1930 the first International conversations on the problem were held. It proved Impossible to reach an understanding be cause the participating nations held different views on the ques tion how far the sea should be regarded territorial waters. "It is difficult to state from existing rules of International law who can be placed as the owner of the bottom of the sea, but I can't see how anybody can argue against claims that a certain part of the seabottom ex tending from the coast belongs to the country on mainland," says Dr. Cohn. Indian Tribe Remnant Receives New Homes ROCK HILL, S. C. (. Brighter days are ahead for a once-powerful, now almost de funct Indian tribe, the Catawbas. Tribe members are moving from their weatherbeaten huts on 600 acres of womout land along the the banks of the Catawba river Into brand new cottages on 3, 600 acres of fertile land near here. The change came with transfer of the Indians two years ago from state to federal government supervision. Slate supervision was a hangover from a peace treaty between the state and the trio almost 150 years ago. The Catawba nation lists 360 surviv ing members who are being mov ed as they apply for land in the new federally-supervised area. Fifty-seven of the tribe's 92 known families have made appli cation for tracts of land rang ing from one to 50 acres, and others are planning to apply. Many already have moved. The land is free and tax exempt, but the new homes must be paid for by the families taking them. Only 25 for the Catawbas are classified by the federal Indian service as fullblooded. And only four, including retired Chief Sam Blue, still speak the Catawba language. Most of the adults have Jobs In textile mills nearby, while their children attend white schools here and in other school districts.
