(CP) Aviation authorities yes
terday had a forecast that jet
projH'lled commercial airlines
will be in use in five years.
It came from Sir Frank Whit
tle. 44-year-old inventor of Hrit
ish Jet planes, and the world's
foremost authority on jet propul
sion. KpeakinK at the Northwest
Aviation Planning Council Con
vention, he said:
"No airline company can af
ford to neglect the gas turbine.
They should plan to go over to
airplanes with propeller gas tur
bines within the next five years."
He said that straight jet pro
pulsion would be develoed at a
later stage. lse of the gas tur
bine system would provide givat
er sjM'ed. greater safety and great
er comfort at both reduced capi
tal and operating costs. Use of
kerosene as fuel rather than gaso
line would reduce fire risk.
He termed the present piston
gasoline engine "a very crude
piece of apparatus" compared
with jet propulsion.
Resolutions adopted called for
elimination of overtime charges
for border clearance in the Unit
ed States; co-ordination of plans
