TWO NEWS-REVIEW, ROSEBURS, OREGON MONDAY, AUGUST 23, 1948 Boston Red Sox Slash Cleveland Lead to Half-Game By JOE REICHLER AMOcUtad Prm Sports Writer The rampaging Boston Red Sox owe much of their amazing uphill climb to their great key stone combination shortstop Vern Stephens and Bobby Doerr. Sparked by the brilliant all around play of this pair, the Red Sox today were in second place In the American League stand ings, only half a game behind the pace-setting Cleveland Indians. Stephens and Doerr accounted for three of Boston's four runs yesterday as the Sox whipped the Washington Senators, 4-1. It was Boston's fourth straight over the Senators and the 10th victory in their last 12 games. It proved proftable Sunday tor the Sox as the Indians dropped a doublrheader to the cellar-dwelling Chicago White Sox, 81 and 4-3, to lose a game and a half to Boston. The red hot New York Yan kees also gained ground, whip ping the Philadelphia Athletics, 10-0. to climb within two games of the Indians. The As, now In fourth place, are three games off the pace. Doerr was the big gun of the Red Sox' victory yesterday. The Oregonian hammered his 23rd home run with Stephens aboard in the third Inning off Thompson to put the Sox ahead 20. Doerr walked In the eighth and tallied one of Boston's two runs In that inning. The Yankees made It three In a row over the A's as Raschi, an old Philadelphia nemlsls, former ly of the Portland Beavers, pitched a four-hit shutout for his 17th victory against five defeats. Raschi helped his own cause with a Dases ioaded double and a sin gle to drive In three runs. Filler Routed In 6th The White Sox not only whipped the Indians twice, but knocked out Bobby Feller in the sixth Inning of the first game. The Chisox added Insult to In Jury when Seerey, w ho was dis carded by the Tribe, poled a two run homer to sink the Indiana Jn the second game. Blasting Newhouser for eight hits In less than five innings, in cluding a home run by Prlddv. the St. Louis Browns walloped the Detroit Tigers, 10-1. Santord permitted only three hits for his ninth victory. It was Newhous er's ninth defeat. He has won 15. The Boston Braves moved two games ahead of the runner-up Brooklyn Dodgers, coming from behind to win. 4 3, on rookie Clint Conatser's eighth inning home run with one on. The Pittsburgh Pirates ruined the St. Louis Cardinals' chances of taking over second place when they tallied three times in the 10th to win 41. The defeat left the third place Redhlrds two per centage points behind the Dodg ers and two games from the Braves. The New York Giants moved Into a virtual fourth place tie with Pittsburgh hy defeating the Philadelphia Phillies twice, 9-4 and 30. Seattle made it a clean sweep In the seven-game series with the fast slipping San Diego Padres, winning both ends of the Sunday doiibieheader, 8 to 2 and 4 to 0. Rapp. Seattle left fielder, rlouted two homers in the second game, which also was highlighted by a triple play ex ecuted hy San Diego. The vic tories raised Seattle above the .500 mark for the first time in weeks. Portland and Sacramento split their twin hill. The Beavers took the first, 8 to 3, and Sacramento the next, 4 to 1. Portland cap tured the series, five games to two. YOUR CHEVROLET DEALER We Angelo, Hessell Defeat Holmback In Mat Tussle Eric Holmback, the 262 pound behemoth from Seattle, failed to live up to his boast of being able to dispose of two lighter oppo nents in a 30minute time limit Saturday night in the Roseburg Armory, and as a result forfeited $:w put up in the ring against his opponents, Bruno Angelo and Gordon Hessell. Holmback, matching brute strength and bulk against agility of the smaller wrestlers, succeed ed in putting Angelo out of com mission for the first fall after 13 minutes, but Hessell managed to weather the huge wrestler's thrusts by clever maneuvering to stav the remaining 17 minutes. The huge ex-football player displayed his tremendous strength by breaking Hessell's full nelson holds by raising his aims and tensing his muscles time after time, and coming out of Hessell's hcadlocks, by merely picking the latter up bodily and slamming him to the floor. Three times Hessell threw his full weight into Sonnenberg butts against the muscle man's stom ach, only to he brushed off like a feather. However, an unexpected dropkirk to Eric's chest, sent him sprawling on the canvas. Angelo used different tactics against Holmback. In retaliation 1900 VICTORIA VICTORIOUS! Holmback favorite punishment Inflictor was getting his opponent in a corner, then repeatedly slamming his massive hulk against him while Referee Ellon Owen attempted to pull him off. Hessell solved this one, however, by quickly dropping to the floor between thrusts and crawling out between Holmback's legs. Holmback showed considerable sed for a man of his size, but the lighter fellows easily side stepped him to send him flying against the rojies or to the mat, when the big fellow would rush in for a hold. Angelo fell prey to a body slam and body press, after being bat tered in the corner ropes. Hair pulling, slugging and every other form of dirty tactics went into the fray. On one occasion, when Eric was displaying his great strength after breaking Hessell's full nelson. Hessell drop kicked to the back and sent him through the ropes. Other Results The preliminary bout pitted Angelo against Danno MacDon ald. Angelo took the first fall with a Boston crab after 6 mln utes. The second fall went to MacDonald on a foul, when Bru no repeatedly choked his oppo nent, then engaged Referee Ellon Owen In fisticuffs, until fans at the ringside grabbed the wrest ler and dealt blows of their own. In the other 30-mlnute prelim inary, Tiger Steve Nenoff took the onlv fall of a rugged combat with Itessell, with a punishing standing long arm bar after 20 minutes wrestling. Nenoff dis played surprising strength and stamina for a man of his age, and came out of slugfests on the long end more than once. Hessell at one time grabbed both ends of Nenoff's long mustache as re taliation for Nenoff's hair pull ing. He had the "Bully of the Balklns" practically shedding tears before Referee Owen final ly broke Hessell's hold.
