AUGUST 14, 1948 Ugly Facts of Inflation Brush-Off May Haunt Republican Campaign By PETER EDSON NEA Washington Correspondent WASHINGTON If President Truman had any previous doubts about which was the wont Congress, they should all bt font by now. For th bruih-olf which the Republican leadership haa given to hit anti-Inflation proposal! waa really of hurrlcana proportions. It swept everything he laid on the table right Into the waste-baskets. If by 10 doing the congressmen think they can go home leaving clean desks and clear consciences behind them, they may be head ed for unpleasant surprises. The facts and figures which admini stration leaders finally got to gether for presentation to Con gress may rise like ghosts out of the scrapheaps Into which they were swept, to haunt the homing congressmen In the months and years ahead. President Truman pointed out In his press conference state ment that Senate and House Ag riculture Committees never even met to see if there was anything they might do to Increase food supplies or cut down prices to the consumer. House Ways and Means and Senate Finance Committees, which handle tax matters, did not meet to consider President Truman'a suggestions for the re turn of excess corporations prof Its taxes. The House Banking and Cur rency Committee went through the motion of holding hearings on the proposed antl-lnflatlon bill. But this committee under Chairman Jesse Wolcott of Mlchl- ?an refused to receive testimony rom Secretary of Agriculture Brannan, Secretary of Com merce Sawyer, Secretary of In terior Krug. Wolcott, completely dominat ing his committee, went ahead In hla own way to Introduce his own version of a credit-control bill. It may do some good over the long haul. But don't expect to take a copy home, hand It to your wife and expect that she will ever buy with it any more groceries for any less money. On the other side of the Cap itol, Chairman Charles W. In the second action. Ed A. I Radlgan asks for a Judgment for i $258.50 for goods, wares, and merchandise allegedly sold to de fendant from Dec. 30, 1947, plus a claim of C. M. McDermott for wrote Congress that under the then-existlns Drice-sunrjori law. 20 million bushels of potatoes would be grown for which there would be no market. Anderson asked that the law be changed so that the government wouldn't nave to buy them up and destroy them. Congress paid no aft'ention. took no action. The result was that In 1946 and 1947 the potato pnc support program cost the government $130,000,000. It may cost another $20,000,000 this year.
