Eisenhower Sees
Little Danger In
Current Spy Scare
DENVER, Aug. 10 (UP)) Gen
eral Dwlght D, Elsenhower said
today that "we can get hysterical
about a spy scare but our govern
ment is aware of these things and
I don't believe the dangers are
great."
"As I see It, we've done pretty
well at keeping our major secrets
to ourselves," he added.
Eisenhower, now president of
Columbia University, made his
remarks at a press conference an
hour arter he and nis wue arriv
ed In Denver for a vacation.
The wartime Commander of
Allied Forces In Europe said he
f found many of his men didn't
have a clear Idea of what they
1 were fighting for. He blamed
this on America's schools.
"Cities should give first prior
ities to teachers,'rhe said. "The
teacher's position in the com
munity should be raised. Their
oav should be doubled to attract
1 more and better people to the
profession and to make them feel
they are apostles of democracy.
"Technical and professional
studies should be only a part of
a broad general education de
signed to make effective citizens
of this Democracy."
On security, the General said
nolicv matters had been debated
openly as part of a Democratic
government but "technical matt
ers are different."
"I don't know If our laws are
adequate but adequate adminis
tration and concern will do that
lob," Elsenhower added. "We
mustn't be naive or idiotlo but we
can be careful.

construction work Is going ahead
at an accelerated rate of speed.
The anticipated shortages in
skilled classifications has mate
rialized, and It is becoming in
creasingly difficult to secure
qualified workers for key Jobs
in Industry. The supply of un
skilled workprs is adequate and
no shortage la expected in this
field.
A slight gain In claims for un
employment compensation over
the month of June was noted. TI.e
change from the 1948 benefit
year waa responsible for the In
crease. The number of job openings at
the end of the month totaled
slightly more than at the end of
June. Sixty percent were In the
lumber industry witn ie major
; lty in the skilled and semi-skilled
I classifications. The balance are
distributed between construction,
trade and service, and otner in
dustries. The current high level of em
ployment Is expected to remain
constant throughout the summer

'Somsbody Lied'
Rep. Hebert (D.-La.) told Lee
and Miss Bentley their testimony
was so contradictory that it was
obvious "somebody lied." Both
witnesses agreed with that state
ment. Hebert said: "I don't know
who is a liar, but I am going to
find out." And, he declared, he
will Insist that the Justice De
partment bring perjury charges
against any witness who has lied.

storm had lifted. By the time they
reached the cave Becker waa
dead.
The rescuers cut his body loose
but it slipped from their grasp
and also plunged over the icy
edge.
