Colonel Crawford, grandson of Medorem Crawford, an early Ore gon pioneer settler whose name appears on the Champocg monu ment, has no home state of his own. Born at Fort Monroe, Va. the colonel has spent his entire life on army posts in several states and has seen overseas serv ice. However, the colonel said, he has a leaning toward Oregon as that was his grandfather's chosen home, and the state from which the colonel, himself, en- ered the service. He was com missioned a second lieutenant in the regular army Oct. 7, 1911. Colonel Crawford traces his an cestry to Scotland. The family came to mis country In tne early 17008 and settled In New York State. In 1842 the colonel's grand father went from New York to Kansas, and then crossing the plains to Oregon. He settled first at Oregon City and then took up homestead In Yamhill county at the Junc tion of the Willamette and Yam hill rivers. He served 44 years with the regular army, retiring as a brigadier general. The colonel's grandfather served as a colonel In the Civil War. Athletio Honors Won Colonel Crawford graduated from St. Johns College, Annapolis Ma., ana the university of Alary- land, class of 1909. Very active In athletics, he won 16 letters in his lour college years. He came to Oregon in the fall of 1909, first to. the old farm on the Yamhill river, and later working in Portland. He entered the service in lll. Colonel Crawford served on the Mexican border from February until Aiarcn lino, in rana ma from 1915 until 1918, and then during World War I, was G-3 of the 19th division. After this he was assigned to the first division overseas in England and trance ana later served witn tne army of occupation in Germany. Sixteen years of the colonel's service after the war were spent with civilian components, includ ing the National Guard, ROTC and Organized Reserves, most ly In the Southern States. He graduated from the Army War College in 1918, from the In fantry School, Fort Benning, Ga. In 1924, and the Command and General Staff School, Ft. Leaven worth, Kan., In 1925. Until now, farmers have been urged even compelled to de vote most or their land to grain crops badly needed for human food. Grain provided more and cheaper calories. Cattle, pigs, and sheep were systematically slaugh tered under fixed quotas. But now, Allied officials have decided that any further reduc tion in livestock especially cat tle would endanger the supply of meat and dairy products. So they are setting out to build up the depleted herds and bring the farm economy back Into balance. Emphasis is put on quality, how ever, rather than numbers.
