Class to Meet j The square dancing class at the Veterans Hospital recreational hall will be held Tuesday -night at 7 o'clock under the direction of Miss Pat ricia Sheehy. Hero Allan Carson of Salem, who Is spending the summer working with the surveying crew of the State Highway Department, is spending two months at the home of his aunt. Mrs. Arthur Clarke, on South Kane street. Attends Conference Mrs. Claude Baker, administrator, Douglas County Public Welfare Association, is spending Friday In Portland attending an administra tors conference. Plans Retirement Of Federal Capital Advisory committee members of the Southern Oregon Produc tion Credit Association branch of the Industrial Credit Association voted In a meeting in the Cham ber of Commerce rooms Wednes day night to attempt to sell enough preferred A stock to re tire ail the government capital, making the association entirely farmer owned, reported Arthur M. Boner, secretary-treasurer and manager, with offices in Medford. The principal purpose of last night's meeting ikas to determine this issue and the members voic ed approval to attempt to raise the required capital to purchase the government's remaining share of $155,000. When organiz ed, the association had $300,000 of government investment, but near ly half of this has been paid off, and the original plan was to re tire ail the government s portion as soon as possible. Meetings are held at intervals, said Boner, to acquaint the members with work of the association and to bring them up to date on progress and to add new members. The Association covers five counties, with main offices in Medford, and branch offices in Roseburg. Coquille and Grants Pass. Boner stated that in Douglas County alone 107 farms are using the service. During the first six months this year the associa tion has loaned In the five coun ties over $1,000,000 to farmers and stock raisers. Reedsport Tax Measure Carries By Slim Margin By FRD M. WRIGHT Nwi-RvUw CorrMDonrJnt REEDSPORT A $,000 tax measure to finance construction of a community center building was approved by the voters here 129 to 108, in a special election Tuesday. The election was a spirited af fair. The local newspaper editor was against the measure and cir culated a special edition ot the paper opposing it. Mayor John Skaaluren, who initiated the ape-1 cial election, rallied the employes ' and wives of the E. K. Wood Lum-1 ber Co. In support of the meas ure and the late balloting swung the election b a close margin. The rlty will continue its pres ent tax level by this vote and in two years expects to raise the necessary $25,000. If the measure had lost, the city would have been able to reduce Its tax levy by J12..XW. This is because the neces sary funds for a new city hall have been raised. Opposition to the community hall proposal was based chiefly on the grounds h. t the mayor, who is chairman of a committee lor building a new hospital in Reeds port, has not pushed that project to a close. The hospital committee has se lected a site, which has been do nated by. the city, and several thousands of dollars have been contributed to the hospital fund by local citizens. Yet the mayor's committee has not gone ahead. ihe nospitai plans nave peen prepared. The balance of the funds necessary for completion of the hospital could he easily raised. Many of the people voting at this week's election asked for a ballot to vote on the hospital issue, an dlcaiion tney were willing to vote an extra tax. The mayor's recent announce ment that he will not be a candi date for reelection is believed In many quarters here to be a "wise move" on his part. Carnival Shows Billed to Aid Post's Building Fund West Coast Shows, under the sponsorship of Umpqua Post 16, American Legion, w ill open Tues day for a week's showing Just outside Roseburg on Garden Valley Road, It was announced today ny oeorge irapans, post chairman for the show. The carnival dates are announ ced as July 20 through 26. Tra palia stated that the Legion's share of the receipts will go into the post's building fund. , irl Scouts to Be Organized by Civic Groups of Women Fifteen representatives of wo men's civic jjroups interested In organizing Girl Scouts in Rose burg met In the St. George Epis copal parish Wednesday night, and elected Mrs. Ralph Voeller temporary chairman of the scout leadership organization. M r s. Lloyd Nelson was elected secre tary Mrs. Roy Byrd, chairman of Ihe local committee on organization, and Mia. Don Gum, Jay-C-ettes president, sponsoring the move ment, conducted the meeting. They will continue In an advisory caoacitv. The following committees were appointed: Finance, Mrs. James Joyce, Mrs. verne Kenv and Ralph Turner; program, Mrs. Wil liam W. Kellog. Mrs. Joe Hrltz, Mrs. Roy W. Barnhardt and Mrs. W. E. Ott,' Jr.: publicity and pub lic relations, Leroy Inman, Rev. Kenneth Knox. Mr. Jeff Jeffries. Miss Maxlne Miller and Mrs. Don Wilson; policies and practices, Mrs. Wavne Crooch, Mrs. Boh Phillips, Mrs. L. H. Pfaff, Mrs. Murray Smith and Mrs. Charles Williamson. Other committees will be announced. The fourth Thursday of each month was chosen as regular meeting nights, the next meeting to he August 26. It was reported that one Girl Scout troop, under the leadership of Mrs. Vern Kelly, has been or ganized and registered in the na tional organization, and that three more troops have br ;n organized and will soon be registered. A total of 35 girls are included in the four troops. Leaders of the other troops are Mrs. Don Wilson, Mrs. Roy W. Barnhardt and Mrs. Jeff Jeffrie.. Oregon Back From Portland Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Page have returned to their home on South Stephens street, following a trip to Port land to attend the funeral of Maurice G. (Tony) Snell. Mr. Snell formerly lived In Roseburg. at which time he was a driver for the Pickwick Bus Company. Later he was a driver for the Ashury Transportation Company and made frequent stop-overs in Roseburg. In his early childhood he resided five miles west of Drain. His Jeath followed a re cent major operation. While In Portland, Mr. and Mrs. Page visited at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lester H. Schulze, and baby son. Cots Roseburg, Oregon Truck Tires Catch Fire, Draw Fire Department Two rear tires of a logging truck operated by Harold Wil liams caught fire on the North Umpqua Road late yesterday afternoon. The truck was brought to a stop on E. 2nd Ave. S., east of the city, and the fire was ex tinguished by the Roseburg Fire Department. Williams, employed by the Staley Transrjort Co. and hauling from Thunder Mountain, said an Inside rear tire became flat snd the resultant friction caused the fire. Williams became aware of the blaze and halted the truck about 4:45. when the Fire De partment was called.
