NEWS-REVIEW, ROSEBURG. OREGON THURSDAY, JULY 8, 1948 THRU Building Progress At Camp Tyee For Girls Reported Good progress was reported by volunteer workers on the mess hall and sleeping shelters being constructed at Camp Tyee for the Douglas County Camp Fire Girls. Volunteer workers devoted Sunday to rafter placement on the mess hall and laying founda tions and flooring on two shelters. Despite hard rains Monday, a group of workers completed sheeting on ihe mess hall roof and laid two other shelter founda tions, bringing sleeping quarter to seven. Two more will be built this weekend according to the camp committee members. Pipe will be laid for the water unit and the kitchen equipment work ed upon Saturday and Sundav. Members of the I. O. O. F. lodge plan to send another work crew to Camp Tyee Sunday. Sev- jeral weeks ago six members of the lodge built a shelter and plan !tt do the same this time It is hoped other civic organizations will be represented at the camp- Isite Sunday. I "We plan to open our camp on I schedule," said Mrs. James E. I Conn, president of the Camp Fire Council. Sessions begin July IS and continue for one week periods until August 8. Harold Hoyt, chairman of the camp committee, left Wednesday for Portland and while there will purchase handi craft equipment for the camp classes. It is planned to have moccasin packets for sale and girls wishing to make these dur- jing handicraft classes may pur chase them at a wholesale price of S2.00 All girls are asked to bring fifty cents to cover handi craft equipment. I The swimming area will be i laid out over the week nd also i with the aid of Ray Brown, J swimming Instructor at the Tern Iplin beach swimming classes. A .raft is to be constructed and the I water roped off for swimming safety. Parents are reminded that they must assume the responsi bility for any resulting Illness if their children have not had typhoid shots. Health examinations for the ! girls attending camp the first ! session will be given at the county health office Tuesday and I Wednesday of next week at 10 a. m. and 2 p. m. Girls attend ing this session are asked to re port promptly at either of the hours set. Guardians will be on i hand to collect the remaining fee due for camp attendance.- Camp ! fee per week has been set at 515UO. ! I . Done Band's Daft At Elks' Ballroom Corrected Red Nichols and hit famed dance band, originally scheduled to appear at tne Elks Terrace Ballroom July 16, will arrive in stead Friday night of this week, it was announced todav by Hal Avotte, manager of the Elks Club. The error In the date was made by the Ho'lywood hooking agent, Ayotte reports, ano was not dis covered until Wednesday after noon. The dance is open to Elks and their ladies only and all lodge members desiring to attend were urged by Ayotte to procure reser v tions Immediately at the club. Nichols and his band have play ed two previous engagements at the Terrace Ballroom and have been very popular w ith Roseburg dance lovers. SALEM. ORE., July Governor John H. Hall yesterday recommended Major ueneril Thomas E. Rilea, adjutant gen eral of Oregon, to be Or?gon'i director of selective service. The recommendation goes to President Truman, w ho will make the appointment. Governor Hall also said the federal government has allocated Oregon $200,874 for operation of the draft during the next 12 months. The Governor also made the following recommendations to the president for other members of the selective service staff: Deputy director, Col. Francis V. Mason, Salem. Administrative assistant, Capt. William E. Detlefs, Salem. Procurement and fiscal officer, 2nd Lt. William A. Bentson, Salem. REAL POLISH UNDERGROUND WARSAW . Poles claim to have found a tunnel running un der the Vistula River from the heart of Warsaw to suburban Praga. It Is believed to have been built during the Polish uprising against the Russians in 1863 but apparently never was used. Before churches were built In Oregon, missionaries a century ago in The Dalles area near the Columbia river used a rock for mation as a pulpit to preach to Indians of this region.
