office will team with Robert Glle, Incumbent, as Republican nom
inees for the office of state representative, according to unofficial
returns collected Friday night by the News-Review. Geddes and Glle
held a good lead over John M. Throne, the third Republican con
testant, with two to be nominated. State Senator Thomas Parkinson,
unopposed for the Republican nomination, received a very flattering
vote.

Douglas County's Democratic voters were nearly evenly divided
in their primary vote Friday for selection of a nominee for the office
of United States Senator. Dr: Louis A. Wood, Eugene, and M. J.
Wilson, Portland, were in a neck-and-neck contest. Wood holding a
slight edge in unofficial and incomplete returns tabulated by the
News-Review. Winner of the nomination will oppose Senator Guy
Cordon at the November election.
For U. S. Representative from the Fourth Congressional District,
Democratic voters in Douglas County prefer Tanton over Sahlstrom.

DIAMOND
Lady, the diamond on your finger is at least 120 million years old. Not only that,
its value has not depreciated during that time; nor is it likely to lose value in the

Though diamonds generally denote a symbol of engagement, marriage or wealth
they have established themselves first of all for their durability, scarcity and beauty.
They're Valuable Tools
Because the diamond is the hardest and toughest substance upon earth it has many
industrial uses. As a matter of fact the diamond mining industry is supported large
ly by the sale of industrial diamonds. These stones are used for drawing filamenls
for electric lights, drilling through stone and granite for building foundations, and a
score of other uses which utilize the hardness of the stone. The by product of in
dustrial diamond mining is the gem diamond which is so rare that to obtain one
carat of diamond It Is necessary to remove from the earth a mass of rock larger than
the Umpqua Hotel. Many miners have worked in the diamond mines for over twenty
years and never seen a gem diamond.
A Gem of Mystery and Violence
No gem has caused so much, furor in world's history than the diamond. The ran
som Of kings, the wealth of nations, the cause of fortune, death, romance and In
trigueall because the diamond is beautiful and rare. The diamonds we display in
our windows, the diamond you proudly wear are examples of the most sought-after
stones in the world. Many persons buy diamonds Instead of bonds or stocks as se
curity In the future for they know diamonds are stable in value. After the fall of
Germany and the resulting confusion in Europe the displaced persons, the thieves,
war criminals and homeless used their diamonds, often the last evidences of great
fortunes, as barter for freedom, food and security. The great diamonds of he
world, the Hope, the Jonker, the Orloff all are famous for their size and beauty.
They reside in vaults and only infrequently arc removed to be displayed by their
owners.
Diamonds In Oregon
Although most diamonds are mined In South Africa and South America, a few are
found in South Carolina, Arkansas, California and Southwestern Oregon. The dia
mond bearing rock, called "blue ground" is usually the pipe of an extinct volcano.
Eons ago the volcano belched liquid lava through the cone and over the surrounding
country; the "pipes" through which this lava burst is the most likely spot to find
diamond-bearing earth. There are at least two extinct volcanos within twelve miles
of Roseburg whose pipes could possibly carry diamonds, (hough it is unlikely. There
arc hundreds of volcanic pipes in the diamond fields of South Africa In which no
diamonds arc found.
