tl ROSEBURS NEWS-REVIEW, ROSEBURG, OREGON, TUESDAY, APRIL 13, 1948 FIFTEEN Druken Drivers, Illegal Fisherman Fined af Reedsport REEDSPORT The Reeds port District Justice Court has been quite active with major cases during the first weeks of the month, Justice of the Peace Fred M. Wright reports. Albert Lloyd Davenport of Scottsburg and formerly of Leb anon, a sports fisherman, was fined $50 and costs for "angling for and catching trout in the Umpqua River during a closed season.' ' Davenport stated that his intent was to angle for cat fish, but as the trout were biting, he "eould not resist the urge to make the catch." State Police Of ficer C. C. Johnson was watching from across the river and discov ered six speckled beauties In Dav enport's tackle box, which were confiscated. Peter Dillon, who was arrested Feb. 23, by state liquor control officers for the "sale of alcoholic liquor without a license from the Oregon State Liquor Control Commission," stood trial in the Justice Court here April 2. He attempted to plead his own case, but introduced no evidence in his own behalf, so Justice Wright found him guilty and fin ed him S500 and costs and sen tenced him to 60 days in the county jail. 33 days of which he had already served awaiting the district attorney's convenience in prosecuting the case. Dillon paid the fine and costs, and the bal ance of his Jail sentence was sus pended. Traffic Violators Fined Ellis Monroe Noblin of Scotts burg was arrested by Officer Johnson at Scottsburg on a charge of "driving and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of liquor." He entered a plea of guilty and was fined $150 and costs and sentenced to 30 davs in the county Jail. He paid the fine and costs and the Jail sentence was suspended. Roy Arthur Hakki, arrested on two charges by Officer Johnson, that of "failure to stop at the scene of an accident" and "driv ing and operating a motor vehicle C. W. Being a returned war veteran, he was given time to secure his fine money. Vincent Esselstrom, of Scotts burg, also a returned war veter an, was arrested by Deputy Sher iff A. A. Eckhardt on a charge of "driving and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence ol intoxicating liquor" and "as sault and battery." As the defend ant is now in the hospital, his case is pending. Lawrence Goodman of Port land purchased an automobile from Lyle Paull for $250, alleged, ly giving therefore a bad check. A warrant was issued April 5 for his arrest by Justice Wright and turned over to Deputy Sheriff Eckhardt. Goodman allegedly passed eight worthless checks to various merchants of the city for merchandise amounting to more than $100. Goodman was arrested for issuing an allegedly worth less check for $1000, given in Roseburg for an automobile pur chased there. Driver Again Accused Herbert Joseph Walrath of Sa lem was arrested April 5 by Offi cer Johnson on a charge of "driv ing and operating a motor ve hicle while under the influence of alcoholic liquor" at or near the Echo Resort on Highway 38. He entered a plea of not guilty and is being held in the county jail for a hearing at the conven ience of the district attorney. Meanwhile he is serving out a fine and a 60-day jail sentence for "driving and operating a mo tor vehicle while his driver's lic ense is under suspension." He lost his driver's license at Salem in February on a drunken driv ing charge. William LeRoy Crook of Smith River paid a fine of $10 and costs on a charge of "failure to give right-of-way." He was arrested by State Officer Johnson April 5. John Howard Rhodes of Flor ence entered a plea of guilty to a charge of "driving and operat ing a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating li quor," following arrest by State Officer Johnson April 5. He was fined $150 and costs. He was tak en to the county Jail at Roseburg for failure to pay his fine and will serve additional time of 60 days. Robert Roy McCollam of Flor ence, who was arrested at the same time on a charge of "drunk on a public highway," was fined $50 and costs which he failed to pay. He is in the county Jail to serve out his fine and an addi tional 30 days.
