ROSEBURS NEWS-REVIPW. ROSEBURG, OREGON. TUESDAY, MARCH 16, 1948 IHIKIfcfcN Convictions of 9 Neqroes on Various Charges Reversed WASHINGTON, March 16. UP) The Supreme Court yester day overturned the convictions of nine Negroes tried on various charges after disorders during a laundry worker's strike in Winston-Salem, N. C. Attorneys for the Negroes ap pealed their conviction on the ground that Negroes had been arbitrarily excluded from jury service during the trials. In a brief order without opin ion the court directed reversal of the convictions. The order cited many recent opinions hold that svstematic exclusion of Neg roes from juries invalidates their verdicts. The nine Negroes were con victed of various charges, rang ing from disorderly conduct to assault, iney were given senten ces ranging from one to 18 months in Jail. One Negro got IS months at road work. The strike occurred in October, 1946. Among other actions yesterday, the court: Refused for a second time to review the contempt conviction of Leon Josephson, Trenton. N. J., attorney, for his refusal to testify before a subcommittee of the House Committee on un American Activities. Denied a group of St. Louis, Mo., policemen a review of their contention they have a right to join an AFL union. They attacked constitutionality of a rule adopt ed by the St. Louis police com missioners forbidding such mem bership. Ruled 8-1 that one-year statute of limitations on suits for violat ing the rent control law starts to run after the landlord refuses a government refund order. This upset lower court findings thfct the year runs from various times the landlord collects the rent. Agreed to review a California law prohibiting commercial' fish ing licenses to aliens not eligible for citizenship. Refused to review the claim of John D. The five students, Arlvn Brown. Joan Ollivant, Barbara Moore, Sharon Loupe and Lewis Ander son, will be among fifty Oregon representatives wnose work win be sent to Pittsburgh. The competition was among high school and junior high students. Gold keys, donated by Meier and Frank Co. in Portland, were awarded to four of the winners at an assembly Thursday at the junior high. Between now and July Mr. Tru man must pick a successor to Clinton Anderson, who will quit as Secretary of Agriculture as soon as Congress ends to run for the Senate in New Mexoci. Some administration lieuten ants were fald to have suggested that the president might cool off the Southerners bucking his civil rights program by picking an out standing agricultural leader from south of the Mason and Dixon line to succeed Anderson. But Mr. Truman was' reliably reported to have vetoed this as an obious and probably ineffective gesture that might boomerang outside the South. The guessing and it is only that is that the office will go to a midwesterner.
