THIRTEEN Thousands of Vets Charge Cheating By House Builders WASHINGTON. Feb. 18. UP) FBI agents are working on complaints from thousands of ex GI's that they were cheated on veterans housing. A Justice Department official who disclosed this said reports of chisling by builders have come In from nearly every part of the country. The largest number, he said, are from Los Angeles, Baltimore, New York, New Orleans, Miami Dallas and Chicago. Morris Verner, compliance of ficer for the housing expeditor, said 36,000 former soldiers have appealed to his division alone. Verner said some contractors left a full room out of the hous es they built. One man, he said, cut the width of each house In a iuw uy one foot so he could get more houses in a block. The compliance division Is sup ported to see that home build ers and sellers live up to regula tions in the housing law. Verner said his staff has been swamped. The Justice Department offi cial, who would not permit use of his name, said Attorney Gen eral Clark has placed one of his assistants In charge of the investigation. If wilful violations of the rules are turned up, they will be handed to U. S. district attorneys for action. In some cases, injunction suits may be filed iiutead oi criminal proceedings.
