It is meeting in Seattle this week and is put ting the bee on alleged commun ists. Those upon whom the bee Is placed are howling like wounded wolves about invasion of their constitutional rights. Again this insignificant writer finds himself confused. He has little use for those who - go around with brass bands . witch-hunting for communists and telling people In effect to "be '. hold what a good American I ; AM." On the other hand, he hat no ) respect for fuzzy-minded pinks .who stand on their "constltu , tlonal" rights and refuse for pub- - licatlon to say whether they are ' communists or not If communism Is worth a tink er's dam as a movement for the establishment and preservation of fundamental human rights; fls followers ounht to be FKOUD of their affiliation with It. e gROM Washington comes this optimistic word: "Republican members of the house ways and means commit' tte said today that taxes can be cut $6,300,000,000 (six billion, 300 million dollars) and the govern ment can still pay 111,000,000,000 (11 billion dollars) on the na tional debt in the next two years." e IT sounds good wonderfully good. If we could cut taxes and begin to pay off our debt at a substantial rate, we could get prices down to something like reason. But before throwing your hat so Ugh It may be carried oft by the wind, remember that this is the BEGINNING of a campaign year. UP In St. Helens (Oregon), they have a butcher war. It started when a new meat shop cut the price of hamburger as a device to get new customers started through the door and the existing shops met the new enterpriser's price and went him one better. The ruckus has now reached the point where one establish ment Is giving away big slices ol ham and paying the customer ten cents to carry It home. see ABSURD? Certainly! But It does point out for us what competition ran do when It gets going. If you'll stop long enough to think, you'll probably come to the conclusion that free competition, even when It does occasionally go to silly lengths, Is belter for the general run of us than monoKily, either by private Interests or hv the PTATK LETTERS lo the Editor Assault Sesn on Moral, Spiritual Principles OAKLAND, Oic. -Relative tu your Monday's "In the Day's News" column, my Inst reaction . was one of shnutInK "Conmmn- - 1st." but on aeisind thought I real IjhI such a charge would not onlv be untrue, but d.-stroy the piest- l(?e of my conviction. Our nation was built rluuirily "DON'T FENCE ME IN' By CHARLES V. STANTON What is to become of the person who hates to be crowd ed ? Where are we, who enjoy when migration to the West with people? Great numbers of Pacific reared where they had room to It has boen possible to get out a few miles into virgin coun try where the voice could be raised in the shout or song without being arrested for drunkenness and disorderly con duct. But times are changing. hamlets are expanding. Our Our agricultural lands are being cut into smaller and smaller tracts, to be farmed intensively. Oregon has not yet felt the pressure as much as have our neighboring states to the north and the south, but migration records show that Oregon is second only to California in new population since the 1940 exceeds 30 per cent. We still have room to absorb hundreds of thousands of people, and we can be certain that the people are coming, lor Oregon's scarcity of population will be altered by people moving out of more populous centers of Washington and California if by no others. We have been interested in number of persons moving into cities or localities where they crowded. This has been particularly true of newcomers from California. The reason wo now mention the fact is that we received an interesting visit recently from a couple planning to move into the Roseburg area in the Perhaps our interest was increased by the fact that this couple has long been on the News-Review subscription list, and that they read this column a fact they demonstrated by quoting our comment on numerous items pertaining to local conditions and activities. They have been studying Roseburg and the Umpqua Basin for a long time, have be come convinced they want to make their future home here, have acquired projierty and soon will become permanent residents. This couple is but one of thousands planning to move to Oregon from California. They tell of many personal friends who are making similar studies of Oregon as they contem plate changing place of residence. This prospective migration of Californians, particularly Native Sons, has as primary cause the rapid industrializa tion of many areas, the huge particularly, the great numbers people emigrating to California The true, native Westerner wants plenty of room. He dislikes being cramped in living space. He wants elbow room. The Westerner thinks nothing of tossing an overnight case into his jalopy and striking off cross-country for a 500-mile visit with "neighbors," whereas some of our Kast ern cousins must pack the family trunk and plan for Weeks before travelling what Westerners consider only a hop-skip-and-jump. Californians frankly admit that the Golden State "ain't what she used to bo." The Chambers of Commerce that added many new superlatives to our language, as they tried to extoll the virtues of California sunshine, are now busy disclaiming authorship of tho word "smog." Where once it was possible to amble peacefully along wide, tree-lined boulovards on a Sunday afternoon's drive in al most any of California's large cities, the congestion of traf fic, and antics of "hot rod" and "squirrelly" drivers today makes motoring anything but-a pleasure. Being one of those persons w ho loves the Great Outdoors, while craving ample living space, we envision the time when Oregon, too, will begin to feel the cramp of population. In fact, we've even heard some of our Roseburg folk grumbling in their beards about "too doggone many people." But our Californians tell us we "ain't seen nuthin' yet," and we know, from obvious trends, that they are correct. We had Burns in mind as a possible placo where we could find the wide open spaces and round out our declining years if Roseburg became too big for comfort, but now that Burns has "made" the Saturday Evening Post we imagine it will be an emigration target and will soon be filled with "furrin nesters." ' It won't Ik- long, we foar, until we'll hear a good, healthy "yipiioe-ki yi" only from a juke box. on moral and spiritual realities, and our present trend is more de structive to our democracy than any foreign military Invention could be. Incidentally you are doing the church, whose spiritual program was built by the lalxrg of Mr. Harrett and others like him, a givat disservice with your libel ous account, hlh, personally, I believe to he a lie, perhaps un wittingly, so then beresay.
